THE task seems simple, but in fact it is one of the most difficult a manager will face.

All Sam Allardyce needs to do is buy a goalscorer.

The Rovers boss has already made a striker his number one priority this summer, but the chances are the budget will not quite stretch to Fernando Torres or David Villa.

Given the odd million here or there, we will all have our thoughts on who Rovers should try to sign.

A number of factors, finances being the most significant, of course mean things are a little more complex in the real world.

But here are 10 strikers in no particular order who could, in theory at least, link up with Nikola Kalinic and help Rovers establish themselves as a top half side once more.

1 Obafemi Martins

Joined Wolfsburg from Newcastle for £9m last summer but his value may have declined a little after a season largely playing second fiddle to strike duo Edin Dzeko and Grafite. Played under Allardyce at St James’ Park and has the pace, power and goalscoring instinct to complement Kalinic. May get more opportunities at Wolfsburg, however, if Dzeko departs in the summer as widely predicted.

2 Paolo Guerrero

The Peruvian played alongside former Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz at Bayern Munich and is now with Hamburg, although has not featured as regularly this season with Mladen Petric, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Marcus Berg also at the club. Tall and powerful, the 26-year-old recently received a five-match domestic ban for throwing a drinks bottle at one of his club’s own supporters. Allardyce always did like a challenge, though.

3 Daniel Sturridge

Appears to have a big future and Rovers’ only hope would be persuading Chelsea that a season-long loan would be in the 20-year-old’s best interests. Sturridge has found his chances limited this season, but Rovers have already had loan dealings with Chelsea after bringing in Franco Di Santo this season.

4 Mamadou Niang

Niang is not the tallest but the Marseille striker’s speed and finishing ability has always seemed suited to the English game. Played alongside El-Hadji Diouf in the Senegal national team and has vast experience in European competition. Captain at Marseille, though, and could be difficult to prise away from the Stade Velodrome.

5 Djibril Cisse

Joined Panathinaikos for 8m euros last summer and has helped to guide them to the Greek title. Has had spells in England with Liverpool and Sunderland, where his pace has made him a constant threat but his finishing has not always been consistent. Could be expensive.

6 Hugo Almeida

Decent in the air and with an eye for goal, the Portuguese striker is currently with Werder Bremen but has never quite fulfilled his early potential. The 25-year-old is one of three strikers to feature regularly at Bremen, alongside Claudio Pizarro and Markus Rosenberg, but has not been at his most prolific this season and was linked with a move to Bolton in January.

7 Ivan Klasnic

Former Bolton boss Gary Megson rated Klasnic as one of the best finishers in the Premier League, but the Croatian has been restricted to a bench role at the Reebok since his return from injury. Not renowned for great link-up play but knows where the net is and could be looking for a new club in the summer if Bolton do not make his loan move from Nantes permanent.

8 Lacina Traore

Still a raw talent but the 19-year-old Ivorian is both 6ft 8in tall and quick. Currently plying his trade in Romania with Cluj but looks to have the attributes to make it in England. Has been linked with Napoli and Arsenal in the last 12 months, with a price tag of £3.6m mentioned. Some have compared him to Emmanuel Adebayor.

9 Felipe Caicedo

Has spent this season on loan at Sporting Lisbon and Malaga after falling victim to the influx of talent at Manchester City. The Ecuadorian may not be the most mobile but scored seven goals last season and was an underrated presence in the City team. Previously showed potential with Basel and is still only 21.

10 Dieumerci Mbokani

Mbokani’s first name translates as ‘thanks to God’ and it is a phrase probably uttered on a regular basis by fans of his current club Standard Liege. A lively and powerful forward, the 24-year-old from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs.
