BLACKBURN manager Mark Hughes believes the lure of European football will prove a major transfer draw this summer.

Hughes, who yesterday signed a new three year deal, is determined to strengthen his squad for an assault on next season's UEFA Cup after clinching a top-six finish in the Barclays Premiership with Tuesday night's 1-0 win over champions Chelsea.

Although Hughes knows the UEFA Cup lacks the kudos of the Champions League, he is convinced it will still prove an incentive for players pondering a move to Ewood Park when it comes to negotiating deals.

"We'll be looking to strengthen the team now we are in Europe," said Hughes.

"Even though we're in the UEFA Cup, it still makes a difference when it comes to attracting players because it is European football.

"The demands of European football mean we have to look closely at the squad, and there will obviously be more demands.

"It's an experience that will help our squad and players to build and improve, so it's an experience we need.

"If we have a decent European run then it can impact on your league form, and we've seen examples of that.

"And as for players leaving, I don't anticipate any of my players doing that - certainly not now."

A place in Europe represents a remarkable turnaround for Rovers in the wake of their relegation battle last season and is further proof of the impact Hughes has had at the club since his arrival.

In many respects, Hughes believes the experiences of last season has stood his side in good stead for a campaign that has exceeded expectations.

And with new players on board, Hughes feels the club can make further strides next season, adding: "I've a great group of players here at the moment.

"If we can supplement what we have then we will have a good season next season as well.

"The qualities we have shown will help us next season, and I think we can build on those, just as we did last season when we were in a completely different situation.

"Next season, though, will be a big demand on the club because we hope to have a significant run in Europe - something we all want."

Hughes is determined to improve Rovers' record in Europe - they have won only once in 16 previous ties - and he's hoping for a favourable draw.

He added: "Everton were unlucky this season (in the Champions League preliminaries).

"They drew Villarreal in an early round, and look what happened to them - they went on to play in a Champions League semi-final.

"So if we are to make an impact on Europe then it is very dependent on what kind of draw we get.

"You hope to get a little bit of luck, and then see how far you can go."
