There is just no stopping Burnley’s Jimmy Wright with yet another win added to his CV at the weekend.

The West Pennine Road Club time trial promotion took in a loop from Knowle Green, near Longridge, through Hurst Green and Edisford and back again with Wright clocking the best time on the day of 34 minutes exactly for the 14.6 mile course, which is just short of 26mph.

His near neighbour in Burnley Peter Greenwood, of the Clayton Velo, is never far behind despite his Vet50plus status and finished sixth and next best East Lancashire rider in 36m 14s.

Even though the on-form team from the North Lancs. Road Club had Fraser Snape, ninth in 36-39, Duncan Park 10th (36-46) and Rob Dickinson 17th (38-42) they had to settle for second best behind a recently strengthened squad from Team Wallis, which is based on Wallis Cycles shop in Higher Walton.

Up in the North East, Barnold-swick-based professional Ian Wilkinson, of the new Endura team, had his first real test in the UK of the 2010 season and finished second to Simon Richardson of the Sigma Sport squad after 85 miles with most of the other home pros in contention.

It was a significant event in that race radios carried in recent years by riders at that level were no longer allowed.

Although there are arguments for and against radio contact, I believe that their use has created negative racing by managers having access to the names and time-gaps of any rider in the race which they could pass on to their riders.

The North Lancashire Road Club promote their annual Easter 10 mile time trial on Saturday at Garstang and event organiser Mark Goodchild has 100 riders on the start sheet who will be extra motivated by the Brockhall Village based Science-in-Sport prizes on top of the normal prizelist.

Tuesday’s announcement that Team Sky have won a Wild Card slot for the Tour de France confirms that Lancashire-based Bradley Wiggins – 4th last year – will be on the start line in July.

Many Congratulations to Colne’s Steven Burke, left, on his Team Pursuit Silver in the World Championships in Copenhagen. The British team missed Gold by a mere one sixth of a second to Australia.
