ACCRINGTON Stanley fans are calling for a shake-up of the club’s board to ensure no one person holds a majority share in future.

The Reds were this week given a week-long stay of execution by the High Court over a unpaid £308,000 tax bill.

But the disclosure in court that just £96,000 had been sent to HM Revenue and Customs, despite a fund- raising campaign bringing in £116,000 and pledges of £100,000 from directors, prompted an angry reaction from fans.

Seventy fans conducted a candlelit protest outside the Crown Ground on Wed- nesday night.

Some fans feel the current board should resign over the debacle, in particular the stubborn refusal – until the High Court imposed the seven-day deadline – to accept stockbroker Ilyas Khan’s offer of cash.

Accrington Stanley Official Supporters’ Club and Accring- ton Stanley Supporters’ Fund chairman Rob Russell said in future Reds shareholders have no more than 20-30 per cent each.

Mr Russell said: “A few months ago when discuss-ing the shares issue at ASSF, we didn’t want to steam in and take a majority share of the club, because we don’t think it’s the way to go about things.

“When there’s one man trying to do everything, the mistakes made mean he takes the whole ship down by himself.

“It is now a case of waiting to see what happens next.”

He was supported by long term fan, Lancashire Telegraph columnist and Radio Lancashire presenter Stephen Lowe who said management at the club ‘had to be overhauled’.

Mr Lowe said: “Things cannot continue as they are. I think every fan would agree with that.

“Fans want to see more openness at the club, more accountability and real changes.”
