PETER Cavanagh will fight FA betting charges at a hearing today – and Stanley may allow him to stay regardless of the outcome.

The right back is one of three Reds players whose appearance in tomorrow’s opening League Two game at Rotherham is in doubt.

Bobby Grant and Ian Dunbavin are expected to be sentenced today after pleading guilty to affray in the same incident that saw Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard found not guilty.

And Cavanagh will contest FA charges of placing a £5 accumulator – including allegedly backing Bury to beat Stanley in May 2008 – although he may yet feature at Rotherham on a non-contract basis if a verdict is not announced before the game.

Should Cavanagh be found guilty but not banned, boss John Coleman has hinted that he may be retained - even though departed chairman Eric Whalley had said any player proved to have placed a bet would have no future at the club.

“I haven’t said that and Eric’s no longer at the club,” said Coleman.
