TOM Dickinson will have had his fill of pies by the time he munches his 92nd of the season at the Reebok this afternoon.

The Wanderers fan, based in Hertfordshire, has travelled the length and breadth of the country on a 10-month tour of all Football League clubs to sample a savoury snack from each and every ground.

The journey has not been without its cost — and not just to the 22-year-old’s waistline. The youngster has spent around £3,000 on his expedition and now hopes to write a book on his experiences, entitled “92 Pies”.

But it is not all about earning a crust, says the former politics student who finished his studies at Liverpool University last year.

“It’s not just about the pies — that is something that the press have latched on to the most because it links all of the 92 clubs,” he said.

“I wanted to discover the Football League and find out what makes football fans go to games every week and what is unique about every club from Accrington to Arsenal.

“It’s been a fascinating journey. Every football club gets thousands of people watching them every week even though the quality might not be too good. It’s a sport that really makes our society tick.”

Dickinson will complete his task this afternoon at Wanderers’ final home game of the season, having experienced the matchday catering from Carlisle United to Exeter City.

“I’ve had to do two or three games a week and it’s worked out at the equivalent of driving to Australia and back in a car,” he said. “I have spent a lot of the season with my nose buried in the fixture lists and schedules.

“The worst experience I had was when I decided to go to Crewe on a Tuesday night. I live just north of London, so it took about four-and-a-half hours to get there. I arrived there one minute before kick-off only to find that the match had been postponed — it was painful having to turn round and drive the same distance all the way back home.

“On the flip side, I really enjoyed the experiences at certain clubs that I didn't know much about like Brentford and Exeter. There have been some pretty good games too, like a 5-4 at Peterborough and a 4-3 at Huddersfield, games that you would not expect to be good.

“There have been some weeks when I have done six games in consecutive days — it has meant a lot of sleeping on floors and calling on favours from friends.”

Dickinson reckons he will be happy to munch through his last meat and potato offering today, cheered on by several members of his Bolton-based family.

“I hope not to see a pie for a good few months,” he joked. “I’ve eaten one at every ground and most of them are of the same brand, but every now and again you get a really good, original pie. Morecambe was the best by far.”
