Blackburn Rovers boss: Referees must face bans for poor decisions

ROVERS boss Paul Ince has called for referees to start paying for their actions after slamming Steve Bennett’s display in Saturday night’s Manchester United defeat.

Bennett’s clanger gifted Wes Brown an opener in United’s 2-0 victory at Ewood Park and left Ince urging tougher sanctions on officials who are getting key decisions wrong.

Nemanja Vidic’s elbow clearly hindered goalkeeper Jason Brown to allow Wes Brown to head United ahead on 31 minutes, leaving a furious Ince remonstrating with Bennett at the break.

While not using the decision as an excuse for his side’s comprehensive defeat, with Wayne Rooney later adding a sublime second, Ince was adamant the time has come for the men in the black to be held accountable.

He also insisted the ‘big sides do get the big decisions’, claiming he benefited from officials’ decision during his Old Trafford spell on numerous occasions.

He said: “I think if it’s major decisions they’re getting wrong there’s got to be a deterrent where they should get longer bans, not just be demoted for a game.

“I’m not saying all officials should be banned (if they make a mistake), but players get banned for being sent off and things like that. Referees are on professional contracts as well so why not?

“You don’t need technology to see that a centre half who is six foot five elbowed someone in the head.”

The unfortunate Brown otherwise starred for Ince’s men as he admirably stood in for the injured Paul Robinson on only his second-ever Premier League start.

Saves from Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs saved his side from a real hammering but Ince was still seething about the goal that should never have stood.

“I spoke to him at half-time and he [Bennett] said he didn’t see it, but that’s too much of a cop out,” said Ince.

“If we got beat four or five nil, you guys would be asking me questions and I’d have to explain why we lost four or five nil and it should be exactly the same thing for him. It’s easy for him to say he didn’t see it.

“I'm not saying we’d have won the game because they’re an awesome outfit, that's why they’re European champions, but you look to referees to get those kind of decisions right and the first goal is always the most important goal.”

Having been on right end of another highly controversial decision against Bolton last weekend, Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United have been living a charmed life in recent weeks - but Ince insists it is more than coincidence.

He said: “You think to yourself is it because it's one of the top four? You can see from history that they seem to get more decisions than lesser teams like we do.

“I think the bigger teams do get the bigger decisions. I’m not just saying it because of what happened today, but I played for Man United so I know, I’ve had it happen to me.

“But I just think when it's a clear cut decisions like that they can’t possibly get it wrong. You can understand if it's 50-50 but when it’s so blatant and they're getting it wrong still, they wonder why we go mad and start telling us ‘Well, you've got to respect the referees’, but if they make the right decisions we’ll start respecting them.

“It's a joke to be fair. You've got to be careful what you say nowadays for obvious reasons but when you go to these referees meetings and Keith Hackett says to you these referees are a lot fitter now and run so many metres and are getting themselves in the right positions to make the right decisions.

"It’s a load of rubbish if you ask me because if he [Bennett] can’t see that and the linesman can't see that they're not doing their job properly. “

If Incey thought Bennett was bad. Good job he was not at Clitheroe on Sunday to see the performance of the Clown in charge of the Rovers Ladies game against Portsmouth. This idiot sent off four Rovers Players. Every tackle by rovers seem to get a yellow card. Whilst nothing for Portsmouth. Even when one rovers player was through on goal and brought down, you've guessed it not even a booking!
Talk about one sided referees, don't know what part of Hampshire his family where from. Even the Portsmouth manager felt sorry for the Rovers players. If Keith Hackett and the FA want more respect for officials then they need to get their house in order.
The standard of Officials as got be improved before there is any hope of winning players/fans over.
As with any job/workplace the substandard people have to be weeded out. Poor performances have to be highlighted and be seen to be corrected by the FA.

Could of been worse; Jason Brown might of been sent off for impeding Vidic by sticking his jaw in the way! I thought the Ref was very lenient:-)

I agree it was a bad decision but it didn't significantly change the result! We were second to every ball and, apart from Derbyshire's chance in the first half, never looked like scoring. Where was the passion that we have come to expect from rovers in games like this! Until Samba got carded late on the only card that Blackburn had received was Pederson's yellow for dissent! I am not saying that we should play dirty but we weren't even aggressive! I thought defensively we did okay but we lacked any sort of creativity in midfield.

Hey Morst....Your correct in the many dodgy decisions BRFC V MUFC !!
My most vivid memory is of Henning Berg being sent off just before half time at Ewood & if my memory serves me we were winning 1 -0 & well on our way for a deserved victory. Cantana scored a penalty did he not?

No two ways about BRFC along with many other clubs have been robbed when playing MUFC down the years.

Another one that sticks in my mind is the Shearer header at Old Tafford & that was chalked off !!

One thing is for certain BRFC have been in amongst it for 2 decades now ,slugging it out with the likes of MUFC etc & I still get a tingle when I walk on the hallowed ground knowing that our club is in,by right..

No doubt our neighbours down the road are gonna get what the Prem is all about when they venture to their cup final against 'CHELSKI'...A true wake up call does await!! & they will field a second string!!

The DINGLES crave for Prem football well come on in & lets really see what your 'Living on history' club is all about in the 21st century nature of football.
Hack it my ****!!

As you state MORST '30 YEARS & COUNTING'

Disgraceful decision by Bennet on Saturday but non the less BRFC did not perform at all...My take 'TO EARLY IN THE SEASON' for any real fireworks....

Hiya Woody - 1993 - Wilcox pen, 2-0 and defender off - not given and then - Schmical's shove on Hendry, Sherwood's goal, Berg as you say, Shearer's goal not offside, Sutton sending off, Shearer pen,Sherwood off, Dunny (was it?) off, Lucas pen (Cup semi at OT), 1-0 last season and it was not a corner when they equalised last min, Brown mugged, and I know I have forgotton as many without looking back at all the video's!

The Shearer header chalked off at Old Trafford was in 94/95 and was in fact a Tim Sherwood header ruled out for themerest of touches on a defender and though, with the aid of the aforementioned Berg sending off they did the double on us, it didn't affect the title destination.
Didn't notice Ince crusading to have dodgy decisions in favour of the big clubs revoked or referees strung up on that occasion or when he scrambled the equaliser home on Boxing Day 93 after Schmeichel came up for a corner at the death and ran into Colin Hendry and Tim Flowers.
However if Ince thinks a sly little elbow had any bearing on Saturday's result he is wrong in the head. Seldom has a team been so comprehensively hammered and got away with a 2-0 scoreline.
What he needs to analyse is why his Rovers team has given Arsenal and United perhaps their easiest-ever wins at Ewood (OK apart from the time Anelka and Overmars and co had us 4 down in 19 minutes) and how many teams we will be coming up against in the next months with as pitifully little to offer as Fulham, Everton and Newcastle.

The ref made yet another mistake against Manure but the real problem was not the ref.
We were second best everywhere - Team - Management and worst of all fans.

Wake up Rovers, you have to understand the locals if you ever want to get back that extra 5-6000 fans, please stop selling us out for a quick buck.

As a fan, im pretty embarresed by these comments.

INCE - we were lucky not to lose by 7 or 8 goals, due to your diabolical/negative tactics, so instead of blaming the ref, maybe you should look a little closer to home as to why we were totally out classed.

Yes it was a foul on brown, but it made sod all difference to the result!

Im happy to give Ince time, and it's far to early to say weather or not he will be a good appointment but i think his tactics were awful on saturday, and he needs to learn how to play against the bigger sides quickly, and he must start taking a bit more responsibility for the poor performances.

Mike - how many games have had one sided first half's against the big 4 but if you come out 0-0 then they have to chase the game in the 2nd half and you can hit them on the break as in many recent games vs Man U at Ewood. But if you have to chase it after a dodgy decision like that it plays into their hands just like the Arsenal game. It may not have changed the result but help at a key stage should not be from the ref!

"Morst" I don't see how the half time score, prevented us from making a tackle in the second half, or how it prevented the manager from playing an extra striker in the second half, ecpecially seeing as we were chasing the game?

You seem to fancy yourself as an expert on the club, and our finances, despite the fact you have never even seen the clubs bookwork (even if you did, I doubt very much that you would understand any of it) so I have no doubt that you can explain my first 2 question to me?

Morst the 88th min Heartbreaker, Accrington says...

Err Mike - if it was 0-0 we would not have needed to chase the game and leave ourselves open to a team who spend more on one player than we do on a squad! - that was my point the ref changed the games status.
Your other comment is silly - even you could budget for a £40m cheque from TV plus about £15m from gates / commerce etc and then work out most will be spent on players. God give me strength! You may recall we did discuss the published accounts in detail on here back in Jan.
