PAUL Ince described Carlos Villanueva as a ‘special talent’ after the Chilean international inspired Blackburn Rovers to a 4-1 Carling Cup win on his debut.

The 22-year-old has been ruled out of the opening two Premier League games after suffering a bout of chicken pox soon after his arrival on a season-long loan from Audax Italiano.

But he made his bow at Ewood Park last night and impressed in scoring the equaliser, after Rovers conceded an early goal to League Two Grimsby Town, and creating a host of other chances.

“The lad was different class,” said Ince. “I've said before he's a special talent.

“He's still not as fit as I'd like him to be but for his first game, considering he had chicken pox about three or four weeks ago I thought he was sensational, and Keith Treacy as well.

“He (Villaneuva) has had a hard situation with his chicken pox and being away from his family, but it was just nice to see him out there, enjoying his football. All the lads, in the second half, played ever so well.

“I made the lads aware, looking at the results the night before with Bolton getting beat (by North-ampton), Crewe beating Bristol City, it was always a game which could potentially have been a banana skin, and I suppose after 20 minutes it looked that way.

“We looked out of sorts until Carlos created a bit of magic and got us back to 1-1, and I think once that went in, I felt a lot more at ease then.

“It was a good response because I thought we started off really slow, but we could have had about eight or nine to be honest, and that's not being disrespectful to Grimsby because they came here and had a go at us and at times caused us problems.

"Coming out for the second half they could have made it 3-2 but Jason Brown made a great save. If it's 3-2 it's a different story then because then we're under pressure.

“But they got tired, which you'd expect being a League Two side, and I think our quality showed through in the end, and it could have been eight or nine to be honest.”

C'mon then, unleash him at the weekend to do some damage, good addition to the frontline that started well, long may it continue.

I was looking foward to the game at the weekend until this happened -
Milton Keynes Dons captain Keith Andrews is undergoing a medical at Blackburn ahead of a proposed move to Ewood Park.

Keith Andrews, isn't it obvious why we are signing him?? Player of the season in div.2 last year, simple really, the guy is a division 2 legend alongside Paul Mullin of Accrington Stanley....thats a point, what about Mullin instead of Fowler? Now that would passify us, wasn't Mullin in the div.2 team of the year?

Anyone know why MaCarthy wasn't even in the squad? Could it be he's off to Sunderland? I say get rid & get the lanky Croat on loan.

For goodness sake, if Paul Ince wants to sign a player from a lower division then give him a chance. He has proved so far that he knows what he is doing, (Fowler excepted, but even he may not sign). Three games in and the players seem to have responded to him and his management team so let him get on with it, without this constant critism from so called fans.
ps, Charlie Newton was fantastic last night (variant translation)

Ince signed Villanueva. Villanueva played last night, not fully fit and was, to say the least, fearsome.
If Ince thinks Andrews, or Fowler, or.. I dunno.. JASON LEE is good for the team, I'm happy.
Sit down and shut up.

I trust in Ince but its obvious we need a replacement for bentley and we arent moving for one, Reid isnt the answer he isnt a winger, Emerton played that part before and is ok but isnt creative enough. SWP is being signed for city and we are buying andrews it just seems odd. And nobody can turn around and say that they would feel comfortable going into the first half of the season without competition for places on the right wing. Also radio lancashire said the Benni was injured and thats why didnt play picked up sort of niggle. To me more likely the way he has been acting is that he decided that this competition ios below him as for some reason he beleives he has a god gievn rite to be in the first 11.
