TWO goals from Jay Rodriguez got Burnley Reserves’ new campaign off to a winning start – with a 3-0 victory at home to Bury.
And the 19-year-old was unlucky not to complete a late hat-trick after straying offside.
In an end-to-end match, Alex MacDonald had the first chance inside two minutes, but narrowly headed Ben Hoskin’s cross wide of the near post.
It wasn’t long before summer signing Diego Penny was put to the test though, and after Richie Baker dragged a right foot shot wide of the base of the left hand post, he saved well from striker Chris Mason.
It proved to be the first of a string of fine stops by the Peruvian, as he went on to keep out Domaine Rouse’s powerful downwards header with his legs before Burnley took the lead three minutes before the break.
Christian Kalvenes forced a corner that Adam Kay delivered to the near post.
Bury struggled to clear and captain Chris Lynch benefited from a rebound that found it's way over the line.
Penny still had to be alert though as Bury pressed, and he palmed Danny Racchi’s swerving shot over.
The 24-year-old reacted quickly to reclaim possession when Rouse’s first touch let him down inside the box, and then thwarted Baker with a shot from the right just before the break.
Jay Rodriguez completed a well-worked move to double the lead five minutes into the second half, firing a bullet header beyond Cameron Belford from MacDonald's right-wing cross.
Penny did well to prevent Bury getting back into the game almost immediately after as he blocked out Baker’s free kick from the edge of the box.
Rodriguez rounded a off a comfortable win for the Clarets by slotting the ball underneath Belford from around 12 yards out, and was unlucky to be denied a hat-trick in the final 10 minutes after straying offside.
BURNLEY: Penny; Hoskin, Kudiersky, Lynch, Kalvenes (Anderson 76); MacDonald (Fletcher 86), Kay, van der Schaaf, Jones; Coyle (Harvey 71); Rodriguez; Subs not used: Kiraly, Craggs.
