PAUL Ince remains in line to bring his old MK Dons skipper Keith Andrews to Blackburn Rovers this summer after making an offer for the Irish midfielder.

Andrews was among the first set of names linked with Rovers following Ince’s appointment at Ewood Park in June.

However, a deal for the 27-year-old failed to materialise ahead of the new Premier League campaign, suggesting Ince had decided against a move for last season’s League Two player of the year.

But the Lancashire Telegraph understands that the Rovers manager is keen to capture Andrews before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.

It is believed that Blackburn have offered in the region of £500,000 up front for the 27-year-old Dubliner, with further add-ons relating to appearances.

Andrews - who at one point this summer was placed on the transfer list - was absent from the MK Dons side that beat Northampton last Saturday, despite reports that he was fit and available for selection.

As yet, there has been no official explanation for his omission, suggesting he is on the brink of a move away from Milton Keynes.

And it could be that Andrews is soon re-united with Ince, who admits he is desperate to strengthen his midfield over the next 11 days.

The pair were first together at Wolves, with whom Andrews spent six seasons before joining Hull City in 2005.

He switched to MK Dons the following summer where, under Ince’s tutelage, he quickly developed into one of the league’s best players.

There are doubts over whether Andrews, who is hopeful of earning an international call-up for the Republic of Ireland, has the ability to step up to the Premier League.

But Ince is among the best people qualified to assess his qualities, having worked at close quarters with the central midfielder.

I'd sooner persuade Fowler to sign than give a LEAGUE 1 player the chance of a lifetime. What does this say about our current midfield? And then the young lads coming through...

At the very most, give him a trial but this is just sending out a bad sign to the fans.

Waste of money - lets hope MK Dons stick to their guns and keep him - it would be an absolute blessing!

Although I'm very sceptical about this, I'm keeping an open mind to the situation as well. We've seen nothing yet to make us distrust Ince so if this is true then let's wait to see what happens. None of us know Ince's intentions regarding Fowler or Andrews so it would be harsh to slate him before anything's happened.

Let's get behind the team on Saturday. We are obviously expected to get the win but the team and staff need our full vocal backing to show we're behind them.

Well said, gosportdunc. I was just going to make the same point. Matty came from the non-league and managed to make the step up without any problems.

Ince is as keen to succeed in this job as we are for Rovers to succeed. He might not have the same attachment to the club that we have, but if he doesn't succeed then it's game over for him. So he's not going to sign players who he thinks have no chance of success. Ince was a top quality midfielder, he has worked with this guy for years - I am pretty sure he has more idea than you lads who get stars in your eyes when you hear foreign names mentioned, but start screaming when it's someone from a lower league who's mentioned. I'll bet you haven't seen either Grella or Andrews play, but because Grella has played in Italy he's automatically worth signing, and we need to steer clear of 1st division player Andrews?

The weekend`s victory away at Everton marked what could be a defining moment in the early Blackburn Rovers career of Paul Ince.

Ever since the self-titled Guv`nor - who has now distanced himself from that moniker - took the fast track from League Two to the Premiership via a very brief introduction to League One, he has been quietly going about his business. Well this would have been the case but for the malcontent masquerading as speculation and conjecture, conjured by some quarters of the English press.

Ince would appear to have been the victim of a hate campaign designed to smear his introduction to top-flight management. Baptism of fire is a term that has been banded around copious previews, reviews and descriptions of Ince`s early days in charge of Rovers.

Whilst the majority of the English press don this apt phrase, it is the same people who have created the furore and spurious image of life at Ewood under Ince that lends itself to this popular idiom.

Without hunting down and outing all the sources of these claims of players wanting out, not liking Ince`s approach and creating splinter factions we will never know the absolute truth but I pose the question: who has actually spoken of their discontent of life at Ewood?

I`m yet to hear it. David Bentley always spoke of bettering himself as a player and good look to him whereas Brad Friedel spoke about having an offer he couldn`t refuse. Nothing there of a star player speaking out against Ince.

Further to this Stephen Warnock, who is angling for a move to Newcastle according to some quarters of the press, spoke of his happiness at Rovers only a month ago. Then there is Roque Santa Cruz who is going to approach Rovers to ask for a transfer. Has this happened? No.

The display on Saturday served to give two-fingers to some sections of the press who could be accused of having an agenda that wouldn`t be out of place in football 30 years ago or in Spain.

Why there has been such ill-feeling generated from loose stories and unnamed sources pose some awkward questions that rear the ugly head of a term that has been attached to Ince`s appointment since day one.

Considering how little activity there has been at Ewood - two departures and just three first team acquisitions, two of which are youngsters - the amount of controversy and column inches afforded to Rovers has been surprising.

Ince has even been giving messrs Ronaldo, Adebayor and Barry a run for their money in the press stakes even though his forays into the transfer market have been few and far between.

His appointment was never going to saunter under the radar but this sort of doom-mongering hasn`t greeted a top-flight manager for years.

The jury is still out for Ince as a manager but that is what he should be measured on and he has been vociferous in requesting this from people. People have been meddling in affairs at Ewood this summer, which has seen complete lies published (note the Stephen Warnock transfer request reports) and could have severely harmed preparations for the smallest town club in the Premiership.

Still Saturday spoke volumes of these inaccurate reports as togetherness was on show from the whole team.

I wait with bated breath for the next few games but hopefully the win at Everton and more importantly the team unity on show will help give Ince some respite and quell the malcontent emanating from some sections of the press.

There's one person who I'd trust on whether he'd be a good addition to our midfield or not and that's Paul Ince.

I'm not suddenly going to take the opinion of some bod who watches the odd game or two over one of the best midfielders in the world in his day.

He's not costing mega bucks so I really don't see people's problem.

As you may have noticed I'm from Bedford. Milton Keynes is 20 minutes down the road and I went to watch them play Dag + Red last season and they thumped them 4-0. I thought he controlled their play and dominated everything that went through the middle.

I'm no scout, neither am I an ex-England midfielder so I'm not the best to ask. What we do have is an ex-England midfielder as a manger and a full range of scouts. So hows about we trust them until we've actually got reason to worry?

Up the Rovers!! We want a win on Saturday and progress in the cup come this time next week. 3 out of 3 wouldn't be bad would it?

England's brilliant under 21 star Matty Derbyshire might be the first man named after a county since David Essex, but he's a fantastic little striker. Hugely underused at Ewood, I was glad to see him on the bench for Rovers' opener last week, and expected him to play a big part in Ince's first season. Hell, he could have even played for England last night, it would have made things more exciting.

However, it now seems he might be farmed out to Blackpool on loan. If this happens it will be an incredible coup for the satsumas as he'll score a hatful at this level.

The story has come from The Blackpool Gazette, and I'd love to hear from some tangerine folk on whether the paper is a usually reliable source.

To be fair Blackpool could be the best thing that ever happened to Derbyshire's career. He won't have to up-roots for a couple of months, the games will boost his confidence, and he'd struggle to find a better manager than Mr Grayson to help develop his game.

"We are still looking and if someone becomes available who I like then we will look to do something," revealed SG, in the paper. Well I say "revealed" - he's not really revealing much. he did however add, "The chairman doesn't like spending the money but it has to be done," which was quite funny really

Exactly - Ince is to be trusted, especially in the midfield department. What reason is there so far not to trust his judgement? The team was a revelation on Saturday so fingers crossed for another buccaneering win against the Tigers.

Thos of you calling for Rovers fans to show faith in Ince are exactly spot on. He is the International-class midfielder and he is the one who has worked with Andrews for the last year or so. Also, he has likely had scouts watch him since. Ok, so one or two people on here might have seen him play once and he was tripe, but who's to say he had a good game? Nobody plays well in every game. Also, Sky Sports is not the same, as you only see where the ball is, not what he might be doing off the ball.

To those negative posters - Stop trying to run Ince down at every opportunity - he's given us a winning start at a team who finished above us last year, in a game where most of us would have taken a point. He has had enough to deal with from the media without so-called fans constantly criticising too.

If the guy is costing a mere £500000 up front then it's hardly something worth worrying about. I understand he's an attacking midfielder so Ince will presumably still be after Grella or another defensive midfielder anyway.

Trust Ince - If we do sign Andrews reserve judgment until he's settled in and played a few games. Ince should know a good midfielder when he see's one and I cant see Ince getting this wrong. For the money being mentioned, I think he will be a good "squad" player and for all the players that have been on trial at Ewood lately, this guys name is continuously being linked and Ince is not rushing into buying anybody which seems to lend to the idea that he still thinks that this guy is as good if not better than what is currently available to buy. As for Anthony Annan, he is currently linked with Arsenal, Man Utd, Racing Santander in Spain and countless other teams - yet nothing. I'm sure that he is a good player but there must be something that we don't know about that is preventing teams from buying him, because if he was the new Michael Essien then he would have been bought a long time ago by one of the big boys. This guy was on Mark Hughes radar last season whilst at Blackburn, yet he didn't buy him then and then this year teams are still looking but not taking the plunge - Why?
With limited money to spend, Ince is not getting carried away and is looking for the best value for money deals possible and whoever he brings in for midfield, beit Andrews, Annan, Grella etc, I'm sure that it will be shrewd business and will strengthen the squad. For me the most important position to fill is right wing with a player with pace needed. We have ample cover with Emerton and Reid being able to play in this position butI believe that the bulk of our kitty will be spent on this position. Joaquin or a SWPhillips etc would strengthen our squad considerably with pace and creativity and in turn give the squad and fans a real buzz.

Career to date, Wolves to Hull £0 (after various loans to lower league clubs), Hull to MK Dons £0, MK Dons to Rovers £1.3?? Oh dear.
I agree there has to be an element of trust but hey, lets be realistic the majority of us do would prefer a higher calibre signing or someone with age on there side and potential. As for the comparisons with Matty D playing for Gt Harwood 3 years ago - he will have been around 18/19 then, not 25. PS, Has Wobby pulled sulk now 'only' being offered a pay as you play? Seems to haev gone quiet. Perhaps he might have to run a bit in order to buy his next toxteth terrace....

Have faith in the guv'nor.

Ince has been in the game at a professional level since he was fourteen years old. If he thinks Andrews is up to the job - for whatever reason - that's good enough for me.

Get behind the boss, get behind the team and save your judgment for when the team consistently fails to perform.

We made a promising start last week - unlike Spurs, or Portsmouth, or Man City, or even Arsenal, for that matter - and we should expect to beat Hull at the weekend and realistically see off West Ham the following week.

Ince is a new manager and in the glare of some seriously intense spotlights. He won't do anything unless he is sure. Have faith, and hold-back on the unfounded, jumping-on-the-band-
wagon, rent-a-sound-bite, tabloid doom-and-gloom drivel.

Pete Doc, Castleton says...
11:19pm Thu 21 Aug 08

I don't know whether Andrews would be good enough or not. I did hear (Radio 5) a group of Div 1 managers - including John Ward of Carlisle - agree that Andrews was the most outstanding player in his Division. Of course we can't assume he'll cut it in the Prem but he may be a useful asset.

This situation reminds me of Nicky Marker - a seasoned lower league pro - bought from Plymouth by Kenny Dalglish, and Marker was a very capable grafter and squad player when he was used. Although younger, super-Atko also came from Scunthorpe and went all the way to the Prem winning team.

We are fed the line that the Prem is the greatest league in the world, but look at last season's FA Cup where squad strength was exposed by the number of teams dumped out by lower league sides (us included).

Although a few generations ago (1966!) Man City bought a 32 year old from Plymouth - his only other club was Bath City. In four years, he had held up the English champions trophy, FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup (Tony Book) Sometimes the right manager, the right squad, the right role and the right time can unearth a diamond.

From the 70s - Tony Field - bought by cash-strapped third-tier Rovers from fourth-tier Southport. He made it to the top flight in England and finished up at New York Cosmos alongside Pele and Beckenbauer

I don't know if we'll sign Andrews, or if he'll be any good, but I'll be happy to wait and see.

And for all those people pouring scorn on his career so far, I would only offer the words "Jimmy" and "Bullard", who, if I remember correctly began his career with Peterborough before being part of Wigan's ascent up the leagues - I'm feel it's often a question of having the right manager to bring the best out of a player - remember how we lost Dunnie for a season or two when Souness got rid of him?

Mark Hughes was definitely regarded as one of the finest strikers of his day. Yes he signed Jeffers, but I seem to recall we actually made a profit on him in the end.

Hughes also signed Benni for £2.5m and Roque for £3.5m. Benni is currently being touted at £8-9m and Roque is worth £20m.

I can't say I'm either for or against this signing, if it happens.

Plenty of players have made the step up and failed, some have made it...Matty being one, though much younger. I too think Andrews reminds me of Nicky Marker who did nothing for us.

On the upside, I've always believed that as a club, we've nearly always got more out of players with something to prove.

Hopefully, if we sign him, it won't signal a lack of ambition. Being linked with Joquain is great, but atually signing fowler and andrews could compound this.
