Jon Dahl Tomasson is hoping for good news on Joe Rankin-Costello after the full-back was forced off against Watford.

Scott Wharton came off the bench in the second half, with Hayden Carter slotting in at the right of defence.

The backline held firm in the final stages to secure all three points after Ryan Hedges’ sweet strike had broke the deadlock.

When asked about Rankin-Costello’s condition, Tomasson told The Lancashire Telegraph: “Hopefully (he is okay) but I am not sure.

“It is, of course, one of those positions where we are extremely stretched. Hopefully, he is alright but I don’t know yet. I think it is 50-50.”

John Buckley was absent from the squad against the Hornets, but the Rovers boss confirmed the midfielder is not injured.

“We played some games during the week,” he added.

“If you look at the bench, I had two defenders, three strikers, two midfielders and Andrew Moran who can play as a 10 or out wide. It was more about the balance of those midfielders.”

Tomasson was delighted with his side’s efforts at Vicarage Road and praised Hedges for keeping his cool at the vital moment.

“It was an excellent goal,” he stated. “I told Ryan always shoot with your right foot instead of your left!

“It was brilliant transition moment as well. We had four or five of those moments in the first half and didn’t take them.

“That is why I was a little bit disappointed with the quality in those moments. But regarding the goal, the discipline, resilience and work ethic, and following the plan defensively, it was great.”

Rovers are back in action on Wednesday night when they head to League Two Harrogate in the Carabao Cup second round. Tomasson’s men also make the long trip to Plymouth on Saturday afternoon.
