ALAN Shearer's decision to withdraw from the race to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers leaves the field wide open.
So where do John Williams and his colleagues on the Rovers board turn now in their search to find a successor to Mark Hughes?
Do they go for a British or foreign candidate? Exper-ienced or up-and-coming? An established big name', or someone with less of a profile but plenty of potential?
The former Bolton manager, Sam Allardyce, is expected to be interviewed in the next few days and, in some ways, he looks the safest bet, but also, perversely, the biggest gamble.
Big Sam', as he became known at the Reebok, has a track record of delivering success on a tight budget, having transformed Wand-erers from a struggling Championship club into a respected Premier League force.
However, the vast majority of Rovers fans seem fiercely opposed to the idea of him being appointed, mainly because of the style of football his teams tend to play.
On top of that, the 53-year-old would also come with a certain amount of baggage, after he was the subject of a Panorama investigation during his time at Bolton.
And then there's the question of his ill-fated spell at Newcastle, where he lasted just eight months before he got the bullet in January.
Another leading cont-ender in the frame is Paul Ince, the former Manchester United, Liver-pool and Inter Milan midfielder who is building a reputation as the manager of MK Dons.
Certain parallels can be drawn between Ince and Hughes, in the sense that both are graduates of the Sir Alex Ferguson school of management, and they appear to share the same hunger and desire to succeed.
But Ince is also fairly inexperienced in man-agerial terms and has yet to be properly tested at a serious level.
If there is one thing Henk Ten Cate doesn't lack it is experience of working at the highest level.
The Dutchman, who was Avram Grant's assistant at Chelsea, boasts a colourful CV, having managed Sparta Rotterdam, Vitesse, NAC Breda and Ajax amongst others, with varying degrees of success.
More recently, Ten Cate has been a right-hand man to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona, and Grant at Chelsea, helping to lead both to Champions League finals.
But does he really have the credentials to become a Premier League boss in his own right, or is he another Brian Kidd? The Rovers board will only find that out by meeting him face to face.
Another Dutchman who does have a proven pedigree as a number one is Dick Advocaat, the former Rangers manager who recently led Zenit St Petersburg to UEFA Cup glory.
Advocaat, who pushed Hughes close for the Rovers job four years ago, has enjoyed success at both club and international level, and his teams have a reputation for playing exciting football.
However, the 60-year-old is thought to be on a huge contract in Russia, and may be at the wrong end of the age spectrum as far as Rovers are concerned.
Two possible dark horses could be Michael Laudrup and Henning Berg.
Laudrup, who was one of the most gifted footballers of his generation, began his coaching career as Denmark's assistant man-ager, and he has since managed Brondby, who he led to a league and cup double in 2005, and the Spanish side Getafe, who were runners-up in the Copa del Rey last season.
Intriguingly, Laudrup, who has a reputation for playing free-flowing football, is also available, having quit Getafe last month.
Berg, meanwhile, is making steady, if unspectacular, progress at Lyn Oslo, where he has spent the last three years cutting his teeth as a manager.
The Norwegian certainly has a strong affinity with Rovers, being the only player in the club's history to win Premier League and Worthington Cup winners' medals, and he would get the fans' backing.
But would he have the clout to attract big-name players in the Roque Santa Cruz mould?
So John Williams has some serious thinking to do over the next few days, with each contender' having different strengths and weaknesses.
He has come up trumps twice before - now the pressure is on to do it again.

Big Sam has years of experience of running a successful Premiership club on a low budget.
Paul Ince has only had success with MK Dons, who were working on a much bigger budget than the rest of League 2.
Henk Ten Cate is a coach with no management experience.
Berg has management experience in a league which is probably the equivalent of league 2.
Dick Advocaat has had no Premiership experience, and has had a chequered management career. Whilst he has succeeded with Zenit, he was ousted by Rangers because he couldn't keep up with Martin O'Neill. He also managed Holland in the 2004 Euros who had a poor tournament.
Michael Laudrup has no Premiership experience.

Henk Ten Cate beat Laudrup for the Greek job = Laudrup still available!! Its not like we could hold on to Hughes even thogh he did not have one - so i dont see the problem - get him!!!

My source is within the heirarchy of the club. Laudrup fits the bill because he has achieved success on a limited budget but has a bit of kudos. THe club are really worried about the crowds for next season. ST are slow that is why lardydunce is out of the equation. Crowds at Bolton felt 20% in his last few seasons and the club can not risk dropping to 15k attendances

Initialy I was gutted when I heard MH had gone to Citeh - why there? MONEY! But once I sat and thought about it I felt it might actually have been a good time for him to go - his last couple of months held a few strange choices - Vogel - not a good game in hime so far yet was playing every game, Roberts - great off the bench but not a 90 min player for us yet MH had him starting every week. Maybe just maybe it was good timing for both parties - and just like Souey we got money for him. I like many above am fed up of LET and all the media outlets churning out the same story but lets be fair as we are not in the euro\'s they need to type something. Also I think at times we as BRFC supporters need to give ourselves a bit of a reality slap everynow and again, we are (as much as it pains us) a feeder club, but I\'ll take that every day that it lasts - what the other choice - relegation due to overspending or a takeover that leaves us the fans paying the loan interest??? We are in a great position to attract a reasonable manager or a good potential up and comer but it will only be for a yaer or two but if they leave us to go onward and upward it will be because they did a great job for us......please bring it on! I doubt the board can win initially whoever they appoint but I hope we all get behind whoever it is because boos transfers to the pitch just as well as cheers do and I know which I prefer. Glad to get that off my chest! Lets look forward and onward and remember that unlike many many clubs we are very well run and cheap to watch.
