Blackburn Rovers analysis: Who fits the bill as the next boss?

ALAN Shearer's decision to withdraw from the race to become the next manager of Blackburn Rovers leaves the field wide open.

So where do John Williams and his colleagues on the Rovers board turn now in their search to find a successor to Mark Hughes?

Do they go for a British or foreign candidate? Exper-ienced or up-and-coming? An established big name', or someone with less of a profile but plenty of potential?

The former Bolton manager, Sam Allardyce, is expected to be interviewed in the next few days and, in some ways, he looks the safest bet, but also, perversely, the biggest gamble.

Big Sam', as he became known at the Reebok, has a track record of delivering success on a tight budget, having transformed Wand-erers from a struggling Championship club into a respected Premier League force.

However, the vast majority of Rovers fans seem fiercely opposed to the idea of him being appointed, mainly because of the style of football his teams tend to play.

On top of that, the 53-year-old would also come with a certain amount of baggage, after he was the subject of a Panorama investigation during his time at Bolton.

And then there's the question of his ill-fated spell at Newcastle, where he lasted just eight months before he got the bullet in January.

Another leading cont-ender in the frame is Paul Ince, the former Manchester United, Liver-pool and Inter Milan midfielder who is building a reputation as the manager of MK Dons.

Certain parallels can be drawn between Ince and Hughes, in the sense that both are graduates of the Sir Alex Ferguson school of management, and they appear to share the same hunger and desire to succeed.

But Ince is also fairly inexperienced in man-agerial terms and has yet to be properly tested at a serious level.

If there is one thing Henk Ten Cate doesn't lack it is experience of working at the highest level.

The Dutchman, who was Avram Grant's assistant at Chelsea, boasts a colourful CV, having managed Sparta Rotterdam, Vitesse, NAC Breda and Ajax amongst others, with varying degrees of success.

More recently, Ten Cate has been a right-hand man to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona, and Grant at Chelsea, helping to lead both to Champions League finals.

But does he really have the credentials to become a Premier League boss in his own right, or is he another Brian Kidd? The Rovers board will only find that out by meeting him face to face.

Another Dutchman who does have a proven pedigree as a number one is Dick Advocaat, the former Rangers manager who recently led Zenit St Petersburg to UEFA Cup glory.

Advocaat, who pushed Hughes close for the Rovers job four years ago, has enjoyed success at both club and international level, and his teams have a reputation for playing exciting football.

However, the 60-year-old is thought to be on a huge contract in Russia, and may be at the wrong end of the age spectrum as far as Rovers are concerned.

Two possible dark horses could be Michael Laudrup and Henning Berg.

Laudrup, who was one of the most gifted footballers of his generation, began his coaching career as Denmark's assistant man-ager, and he has since managed Brondby, who he led to a league and cup double in 2005, and the Spanish side Getafe, who were runners-up in the Copa del Rey last season.

Intriguingly, Laudrup, who has a reputation for playing free-flowing football, is also available, having quit Getafe last month.

Berg, meanwhile, is making steady, if unspectacular, progress at Lyn Oslo, where he has spent the last three years cutting his teeth as a manager.

The Norwegian certainly has a strong affinity with Rovers, being the only player in the club's history to win Premier League and Worthington Cup winners' medals, and he would get the fans' backing.

But would he have the clout to attract big-name players in the Roque Santa Cruz mould?

So John Williams has some serious thinking to do over the next few days, with each contender' having different strengths and weaknesses.

He has come up trumps twice before - now the pressure is on to do it again.

Laudrup or Ince (assistant to Allerdyce) ?
But not Ten cate !
Here in Holland we are not very impressed by Henk ten Cate associating himself with the vacancy at Ewood. He has had a very chequered career, both as a player and coach. I hope Rovers are not blinded by the fact that he has been number 2 at Barca and Chelsea and managed Ajax (where he wasn’t considered a success !). Ten Cate never stays anywhere for very long, he seems to have an impact in the first season and then fades and falls out of favour. He is not what you want if you are looking to stabilise things after Hughes, he has never built a team and enjoyed consistency or success. He is at best a strikers coach but not a club manager. Advocat or Allerdyce would be a much better choice than Ten Cate.

Answer the questions, appoint the coach, get the supporters behind you & let's go forward to the dream of once again holding that cup up to the fans & making the statement that we do belong & you'd all better well pay us some respect, good luck to hughsie, thanks for some great memories, time to move on and GO YOU BLUES,. i honestly think nobody has an actual clue over who can be next. everybody is mentioned. we cannot give big sam a chance. he had a chance at newcastle. i do not think williams could honestly see him as a long term possibily. Shearer - was he scared of being on the shortlist and not getting it? Ring him back john!!!!! I like roy keane. could we not look at other managers who are currently in employment and doing well? had season ticket for going on 20 years and I cannot see sam here. He should never have left bolton for the toon. if he hadnt im sure he would still be employment now.

Big Sam has years of experience of running a successful Premiership club on a low budget.

Paul Ince has only had success with MK Dons, who were working on a much bigger budget than the rest of League 2.

Henk Ten Cate is a coach with no management experience.

Berg has management experience in a league which is probably the equivalent of league 2.

Dick Advocaat has had no Premiership experience, and has had a chequered management career. Whilst he has succeeded with Zenit, he was ousted by Rangers because he couldn't keep up with Martin O'Neill. He also managed Holland in the 2004 Euros who had a poor tournament.

Michael Laudrup has no Premiership experience.

Rover the edge, says...
1:06pm Fri 13 Jun 08

For me it is a no brainer, I think we should go for Dick Advocaat. We need to not only sustain our position in the league but ensure we have the best possible chance of improving on it. I really think that Dick Advocaat fits the role based on the afor mensioned criteria. Taking either Aladis or Ince would not only be a larger gamble but a risk that could prove costly. If one takes into account how well this club does even though it is on a limmited budget and also that the manager would geet full backing from the board this is an attractive job for most managers.

Thanks for your reply here BillMORST who looked into the eye of the beast thus destroying his great 'LOVE AFFAIR' but not is love for BRFC, modern day football as a lot to answer for.

I guess if I'm honest a feeling of trepidation is all over me at the moment regarding BRFC's situation non more so than that of the loss of MH. I did say when the news broke of MH's departure I was livid, simply because we have lost a future great & BRFC had it within there grasp to harness this guy with a little more ambition.

The new guy as to be able to take us to the next level or BRFC will slip faster than a dose of salts. Considering that the 'MONSTER' is becoming increasingly hungry!!

The new generation of BRFC supporters should be more respectful of the older generation of BRFC supporter simply because experience cannot be bought. If the dark days do descend again over BRFC then I would expect to see, considering the opposition people have to non-renewal etc 20,000 still attending.

The question to me is'can you support your club through all situations? I think we will find people's loyalty sretched to the very limit in the coming years!!

Each day we see twists and turns and I just think someone we dont know about is seriously in the frame here!!
Normally, the big boys in the Media speculate really heavily, on this occasion, 'alls quiet on the western front' now it appears Ten Cate is out of the equasion, there is one less to speculate on, that we know of that is.
I wonder if The Lyon coach, ex Pompy manager has applied, just won French league and quit after a row with chairman!!
Didnt do too well at Portsmouth though as I recall!!
Might prefer the north though, with the rain we have here there will never be a shortage of frogs lol.
This is now dragging on longer than I expected, normally the press are spot on with their views, this time though they are a mile off and clutching at straws, hopefully one of the tabloids may pick up on something soon, but I really think something is odd here!!

It updates itself regularly, with all the current odds from all the major bookies.

Whether they have any real idea who it will be is open to debate, as is the case with all the newspapers at the moment. The Rovers board are definately doing the right thing in making sure nothing is leaked to the press.

The only things we do know for certain are :
1) Shearer does not want it.
2) Ince wants us to approach him regarding it
3) McLaren is interested in it.

We only know this because all 3 have publicly spoken out regarding it. We have heard nothing 100% from either the board or Allardyce himself regarding his position, although i think it is fair to say that he is interested.

All the other names who have been mentioned also, we too, have heard absolutely nothing from either the board or themselves regarding their chances.

We just have to have confidence in JW and the board that whoever they do appoint, will be the right man for the job, and as i keep saying, be at Ewood next season supporting our team.

For those of you that can't get to Ewood for whatever reasons, please keep suppoting the club in whatever way you can.

I think Laudrup sounds like a really good candidate.

Berg is another interesting candidate, he has done really well in Lyn Oslo with little to no resources.

Maybe a Laudrup-Berg team? With Berg being groomed to being the manager when Laudrup leaves for a bigger job, which I think he would do eventually. Just like Hughes.

No doubt Mark Hughes did a fantastic job for Blackburn Rovers, but his comments were less than gracious when he left claiming he had 'raised expectations', had the 'best management team in the premiership' and 'needed the buzz of a big club'. This from the man who uncerimonously sacked Tony Parkes, after 34 years service, for no good reason and overnight knocked 4,000 fans off the gate 2,000 never to return. Hughes will find after a while at Man City that Blackburn are a 'proper' football club run by 'proper' football people and that dealing with John Williams was a whole lot different to Mr Shiriwatra and his men in suits. His obvious replacement is Alan Shearer, the queue for season tickets will stretch back to Darwen St Bridge and the town will be buzzing. If not Shearer then the 'old fox' Dick Advocaat, his C.V is to 'die for'. Please, Please, Not McLaren.

Even thinking about Big Sam reminds me of the Cleese/Barker/Corbet

t sketch "I know my place". To appoint Allardyce would be to say to the fans, the town and football generally that we know our place, don't aspire to anything other than Premiership survival, don't try reach for the stars.
WHY NOT???
Whoever it is, it has to be someone who shows that the club still has its ambitions, even if not to be one of the big four (sadly, probably too much of a dream), at least to be top of the next tier in the Premiership and in Europe.

My source is within the heirarchy of the club. Laudrup fits the bill because he has achieved success on a limited budget but has a bit of kudos. THe club are really worried about the crowds for next season. ST are slow that is why lardydunce is out of the equation. Crowds at Bolton felt 20% in his last few seasons and the club can not risk dropping to 15k attendances

Hi you Rovers supporters - just to let you know that my wife & I flew into Manchester tonight and we were sat next to Mr & Mrs Laudrop. They are a charming couple and when I asked why they were heading to Manchester, Laudrop just smiled and said 'that's business'. Good luck - he seems a great guy.

Initialy I was gutted when I heard MH had gone to Citeh - why there? MONEY! But once I sat and thought about it I felt it might actually have been a good time for him to go - his last couple of months held a few strange choices - Vogel - not a good game in hime so far yet was playing every game, Roberts - great off the bench but not a 90 min player for us yet MH had him starting every week. Maybe just maybe it was good timing for both parties - and just like Souey we got money for him.

I like many above am fed up of LET and all the media outlets churning out the same story but lets be fair as we are not in the euro's they need to type something.

Also I think at times we as BRFC supporters need to give ourselves a bit of a reality slap everynow and again, we are (as much as it pains us) a feeder club, but I'll take that every day that it lasts - what the other choice - relegation due to overspending or a takeover that leaves us the fans paying the loan interest???

We are in a great position to attract a reasonable manager or a good potential up and comer but it will only be for a yaer or two but if they leave us to go onward and upward it will be because they did a great job for us......please bring it on!

I doubt the board can win initially whoever they appoint but I hope we all get behind whoever it is because boos transfers to the pitch just as well as cheers do and I know which I prefer.

Glad to get that off my chest! Lets look forward and onward and remember that unlike many many clubs we are very well run and cheap to watch.

Interesting developments about Laudrup if true. Regarding Hughes, he was great for Rovers and 7th in the Premiership is a real achievement but he's not the best manager out there by any means. He's driven, got the best out of most of the players, got them fit and organised, did well in the transfer market. However, tactically at times I think we were naive and the football was rarely thrilling in the second half of the season. When we tried to be more expansive, earlier on last season, after a good start, we shipped goals and had to revert to 4-5-1 for a while to steady the ship.

For me we need a bright young manager who is a name and very driven like Hughes. Shearer would have been great I think but he has once chance to prove himself and he would prefer a club with lots of cash to spend to bring in more quality if it wasn't working out.

Laudrup or Ince for me.

I'll endorse this.

there were times last season when we should have pushed on and top 6 was easily achievable. Its easy to blame the players but tactics and systems are a big part. I still cant comprehend how we got knocked out of the cup by coventry. As it turned out ..the FA cup was our's for the taking this year but we decided not to compete ....so we tred water for the final quarter of the season giving MH lots of time to consider options !! and the final knockings at birmingham ?? if we'd won it was europe again !! MH had JW and a good board behind him. They gave him time but at the end of the day (quite rightly) they wouldn't gamble the future of the club by over stretching the finances. All the managers I've heard ...including fat sam and brollyman.. would do a decent job. I trust JW to pick the best available ... (shame about shearer/newell though)

he should not even be on the short list , now we need this sort as there is the small matter that half the squad is being touted arnd .
because leave it to long & there will be no team to manage . its typical rovers every thing has to turn into a soap opera .
for gods sake start acting like a premier league out fit & get this sorted . the whole alan shearer thing has made us look like a laughing stock .
who ever the nxt man is just get him on board quick as we need some stability quick .

Ok, no Shearer or Ten Cate, for me it's gotta now be:

1) Laudrup

2) Slavan Bilic

3) Dick Advocaat

4) Paul Ince

BUT AVOID BIG SAM AND MCCLAREN LIKE THE PLAGUE!!

And surely the new managers first signing's gotta be the dutch right back Bouhlarouz. The guy has simply been immense.

Samba's off for 4M?? If we hold out for 6M ok, i'd take that and replace with someone like Steven Taylor.

Well, he's identified three already, of course they arent at Rovers, they are at the superclub Bumley, I believe he needs a Quality keeper, a top class central defender and a creative midfielder!! he has also identified a back up keeper there as well!!

I would Definately go for Laudrup. He has everything to make Rovers push on for a top 4 place, and would easily attract big name players. I wouldn't mind Ince, but there is that fear of inexperience surrounding him, so if he would agree to an assistant role with Laudrup leading, it would be a dream!!
