JIMMY Phillips, the Bolton boy who graduated through the ranks to play more than 400 games for Wanderers, has taken charge of the club's youth development programme.
The 42-year-old former full-back has been appointed manager of the Reebok academy in succession to Chris Sulley, who left the club in March.
A respected member of the backroom staff since he retired from playing in 2000, he will continue in his role as first team coach until the end of the season.
Phillips said: "This football club is in my blood and I'm looking forward to the challenge of finding players and developing them into first team footballers.
"Having come through the youth system myself 25 years ago, I am looking forward to playing a crucial role in the club's future."
Sharples born Phillips joined Wanderers as a trainee in 1982 and made his first team debut two years later.
He made more than 100 appearances for Wanderers before he was transferred to Glasgow Rangers in 1987 and had spells at Oxford and Middlesbrough before returning to Burnden Park in 1993.
He made more than 300 appearances in his second spell, playing a key role in the promotion-winning teams of 94-95 and 96-97 that gave him the ndistinction of playing in the Premier League for the town he represented as a schoolboy.

WOTS THE POINT IN AN ACADEMY WHEN WE DONT FEED THEM INTO THE FIRST TEAM??

What about this - priceless!
From the Mirror today:
Kevin Nolan: Bolton need to stick with Gary Megson
By David Anderson 3/05/2008
Kevin Nolan has urged Bolton to stick with Gary Megson even if they go down because he is "the new Sam Allardyce".
Nolan claims Bolton desperately need some stability after going through three managers in a year and fears they could nosedive further if they make another change.
The Wanderers skipper can see many of former boss Allardyce's qualities in Megson and is adamant he can restore the club's fortunes.
"Gary is someone who's come in and worked hard," said Nolan. "He has the same qualities I saw in Sam Allardyce. I see a lot of what Gary's doing the same as what Sam did.
"I am still delighted with the appointment. He can take us further, keep us in the Premier League and take us to where we belong.
"You don't want to become an unstable club and if we keep sacking managers and bringing someone else in, we could go that way. And there's only one place we're going if that happens - and that's down.
"We've got to be able to stick with the managers, like we used to, because this club over the last seven or eight years has been one of the most stable in the Premier League. "It has been a big shock to the system what has happened in the last year and we've just got to make sure we give this manager the time and all the support he needs."
Several fans will disagree with Nolan's backing for Megson with the club just one point above the relegation zone going into this evening's must-win home game with Sunderland. They want 'Mugson' - as they've dubbed him - out.
Nolan understands their anger but says Megson and the players need their support at this critical time. I've seen the fans' frustration at first hand," said the midfielder. "I know a lot of season ticket holders and they understand the situation.
"I just urge them to stay behind us and keep supporting us to make sure we do remain in the Premier League.
"Then next year we will move back in the right direction. I really believe that. I urge the small minority of supporters to stop being so negative."
