Roque Santa Cruz: I'm very happy at Blackburn Rovers

ROQUE Santa Cruz has moved to quell speculation concerning his future by insisting he has no desire to leave Blackburn Rovers this summer.

The Paraguay international is inevitably attracting attention following a brilliant debut season in the Premier League, with Manchester United the latest club to be linked with a move for Rovers' top scorer.

Is Santa Cruz your player of the season? Add your comments below.

However, the 26-year-old, who bagged his 21st goal of a hugely productive campaign in the 1-0 victory at Portsmouth on Sunday, has stressed he is happy at Rovers and is not contemplating moving elsewhere at this stage in his career.

Referring to the recent speculation, Santa Cruz said: "I don't think a lot about it.

"The important thing for me is I'm very happy at Blackburn, and my family is very happy.

"It's important for me that I am playing regularly and the manager here has given me confidence in myself.

"So I'm not thinking about going anywhere else, I'm just enjoying my time here and I'm very happy."

Snapped up for £3.8m from Bayern Munich last summer, Santa Cruz has proved to be one of the signings of the season, having made a remarkable impact during his first year in English football.

Prior to this season, the Paraguayan was never particularly prolific during eight seasons in Germany, so even he admits his scoring record this term has surpassed expectations.

"It's better than I was expecting," he confessed.

"When I came here, I was thinking I might get 12, or maybe 15 goals, and that would be fantastic.

"But since I got to that target I've just been enjoying the games more and more because I haven't put any pressure on myself."

Not surprisingly, Santa Cruz's goalscoring form has alerted some of Rovers' rivals, with Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and now United, all linked with swoops for the South American.

However, the player himself insists he is content where he is.

"There is no real need to change," said Santa Cruz.

"I do have goals in life, and in my career, but right now I just want to enjoy the moment.

"Of course I am hungry to win more titles, and play in Europe, and do this and that.

"But maybe it's step by step and coming here was a big step in my career, so I just need to concentrate on that and make sure I give one hundred per cent.

"I'm not the kind of person who is always thinking about the things you choose in your life, I just go through and do the best that I can.

"But I can look back behind me and say I made the right choice in coming here."

Is anyone else getting sick of the potential 'price tag' for Roque Santa Cruz.

Considering Berbatov, a year older, apparantly still has an asking price of £30mil when I've read reports this morning that £11mil for Santa and Derbyshire might 'test the water'.

Anything less than £15mil for Santa would be robbery, even Anelka who was no more impressive at Man City or Bolton has just left for £16mil.

Half these reporters seem to think Blackburn's transfers are frozn at mid-nighties prices.

i agree with you stephen. papers quote 12mill for bentley. bent went to spurs for nearly 17mill and hes older and crap! 2omill for bentley MIGHT test the water! i'd take santa over berbatov so to say he's worth 3 times less than him is a joke. if teams wana offer for our players or papers wana spread rumours at least make it realistic and dont insult our intelligence!

Well said Stephen...Rovers always seem to get a harsh ride of transfer fees. Look at Darren Bent £17m..and Barbietov £30m...Santa is a better player than both. If Hughes does think a sale is good for the team I wouldnt even look at it unless it said £20m on it before clauses! Same goes for Bentley..£17m Mascherano..and he wont score you 10 and get 15 assists in a season. £20m or he doesnt leave, that would be fair i think, given his age, potential and performances...

I can't see Gareth Barry leaving Villa for less than £15m so why should Rovers do any worse

Absolutely right stephen, at any other club some of these prices quoted would be twice at much.

Mark, At the moment NO offer would be good for the club. The top players HAVE to stay this time around. The fans will feel cheated if Rocky or Bentley leaves.
Also Mark, I have heard a rumour from a very good source that Tom Huddlestone and Ledley King are on your target list. True or false?

Just seen we've been linked with Andrei Arshivan for £4.5m, Javier Saviola for 2m, Justin Hoyte for 2m and Tal ben Haim for 1.5m.

Saviola is only 26 so is an interesting name, definitely a quality player, not sure if he'd come to us or not.

Hoyte would be an interesting signing for right back, he's young and improving.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of Tal ben Haim, he was very good at Bolton, one of the main reasons they did so well. 1.5m isn't much so i'd consider it.

Arshivan is a quality player and by the looks of things we may miss out on Bradley from Heerenveen to Everton so he is another option

agree with monkey bout roberts, they're startin to form a decent partnership and understanding!

hope we dont sign bellamy, hes crap and will be injured, waste of money, we dont need him.

Gents, if we get offered an 'over the odds' amount from a Man U or Milan size club, the player will leave. We should be realistic, and assume that this will not happen, and likewise, if it does, this will be the right deal for the club as well, as it helps move us up a level by increasing the kitty. Now, see Mark has roughly a 10m transfer kitty this summer. Tal ben Haim is gonna cost around the 1.5/2m so what you do is this:

10-2=8

That's 8m left (not all the budget gone on a centre half then)

Now run along back to class, play time is over.

As for my information, i just look at a wide range of publications and sources and put the most likely ones here for the other Rovers fans to see and comment on.

as they say every player has his price, but its good to hear that Roque is happy were he is at the moment.
the problem the club has had over the last few years is a second goalscorer, 2006 Bellamy was main striker, then last season Benni, and this season Roque without a second striker hitting the net regularly. (i know Benni has banged in 10+ this season, but mainly pens and when was the last time he scored from open play?) Jr has been playing well the last few weeks, and he seems to have built up a good understanding with Roque but he's not a prolific scorer. Hughsie obviously thinks that there is more to come from Benni otherwise why extend his contract and give him a pay rise. as for buying another striker, strikers demand big fees and at the moment rovers dont spend big money so unless hughsie sees someone out there who he rates and he can afford then i think that the four strikers we have will be the same four next season.
we all think we know what area's need strengthening, but Hughsie doesnt buy for buying sake and unless a player can add to the squad then he wont be coming.
in Hughsie we trust

Keep the faith

Undoubtedly a magnificent and shrewd purchase by our splendid Manager. 'Well done Sparky'!

Santa Cruz would get my vote for 'out' player of the year - although others have performed their tasks magnificently all Season long too.

Brad HAS to be THE player of the year, however. He is the quintessential Keeper and a truly great individual - all of which greatly assists his team-mates on, and off, the pitch.

IF ONLY we can keep our 'star' players - which are getting quite sizeable in number - we'll have a marvellous season next year.

LOL Appologies Ossy, the sun does tend to fry your brain :p Sometimes i see stupid comments and just ignore them, but they mount up and every so often i feel complelled to let fly LOL

With regards to Ben Haim, Samba has been poor this season, but, i'm cautiously willing to right that off as second syndrome. This happens a lot with unheard of players, they come in and make a major impact the first season, then dip, ie: Mokoena, Gresko etc. He came in and for that half season was fantastic at left back, then he went back to being pants. Needs to be said though Samba has the attributes to be quality.

There are far more pressing signings we need as you know. Pacey striker to play alongside Santa Cruz, but i saw Hughesy was quoted as saying he's happy with the 4 strikers he has, so maybe he won't buy another striker.

Right back, Hoyte is you know, quite good LOL at least he's young and improving, and if Mark says he'll cut it, i'll back his judgement.

The last centre half to leave chelsea was Huth, £6m to Middlesboro, the last reserve to leave Arsenal was Diara to Pompey for £5m, so why you think we will be in for hoyt/ben haim is absolutely beyond me. 1) we definately don't need a centre back 2) we are nowhere near the financial league to be paying top money for any player that we don't need 3) There are a couple of positions that we really do need to spend money on, and as with bellamy/benni, if its a top quality player that we can improve further, Hughsey is happy to spend most of his budget on that key player. Daniel, I've spent about ten minutes looking up these transfer fees so that I can help get you to understand the situation better. lads, please be realistic...we need cover for the left midfield, and possibly a creative central midfielder. More than anything we need pace, which would give us a better attacking threat. We don't need any defenders, and the liklihood re any attacking options is that he will be a relatively unknown, and from abroad, or from a relegated club. Rovers cannot be paying top dollar for any player, all of our recent buys have been 'risky' for one reason or another, but that also means within our budget eg Roque/Righters. Its probably best not to throw random names into the hat, as Hughsey will have his targets all sorted, and I would imagine all of them will not have been mentioned on here! (and ben haim definately won't be one - I dont have inside knowledge, its just common sense!)

What makes you think either of those strikers would be better in the premiership than Roberts and Derbyshire.

One of the things Hughes has done superbly is going for continuity. He believes in the players he's got. Sure, he could swap out two players with premiership experience for two unknowns, but he won't.

I think any of Derbyshire, Roberts and McCarthy have the potential to be 20 goal strikers next year - and looks like Hughes is going to give them that chance.

I'm hoping that 10m is right for what we might have to spend this summer - presuming that a takeover doesn't happen. Of course, should one of our 'stars' leave, I would expect the entire transfer fee to be added to Sparky's budget.

I agree in that a centre-half wouldn't be my top priority. We have 4 top centre-halves in our squad (Ooijer, Samba, Nelsen and Zurab) and we have more pressing issues. So whilst Ben Haim might represent good value at 2m (if that's his price), I would still say no.

I agree that a 2nd goalscoring forward has been our problem for some time now, but most other clubs around us have similar problems. I'm not sure I follow the argument about Benni - why does it matter that he's scored a few pens this year? A goal is only worth one, regardless of where it comes from. Yes, he might not have hit the heights of last season, but then neither has Pedersen - Nelsen and Samba have also had dips in form. JR has had a good run in the side and has proven a decent foil for Roque, but I, like others, am not sure he will get the goals we need. He would be useful to keep around as an impact player, but maybe Derbyshire could play that role too.

Hopefully it will be an exciting summer for Rovers and that the talk will be of who we've added, rather than replaced. In the meantime, let's give those who are here the benefit of the doubt for the last home game against Derby! We should know by know what the media is like in stirring up trouble and unrest - we need to get behind our best players like Benni and Bents, not jump on their backs when things appear in the newspaper.

I think "the big 4" will wait and see what Roque does next season before looking to buy. So many players have a great 1st season in the prem, and then fade the previous year, with Benni being the perfect example (along with the Reading 1st team squad).
RSC has been a suberb signing, but let's not forget Roque previously averaged 5 goals a season for bayern Munich.

As for a strike partner, id love to see us go for James Mcfadden. He had a bad time with Everton, but has looked different class for Birmingham and Scotland, and could do the same job as Bellamy did for us.

As for Ledley King? why would we want someone that only plays 2 games a season?

Boris The Spider, London says...
5:55pm Tue 29 Apr 08

I remember last close season when it was announced that we were about to buy Roque - Benni & JR both said we don't need another striker as they weren't going to give up their places in the team. There was also a lot of posts from fans questioning why we needed a striker when we already had those two scoring for fun (remember at the end of last season JR was also scoring a lot).
The same can be applied to a centre back. We may have decent quality, but if someone can come in at the expense of one of Samba, Ooijer, Nelsen or Zurab then he will be worth while. None of those four have been faultless this season, and Ben Haim may well not be the answer, but if we do go for him, it will be beacause Sparky believes it will improve what we have. If he can work the usual Sparky magic, then we will all be happy this time next season.

Roque's one of the best buy's of this season and for him to score 21 goals in his debut season is a mighty success. You can just tell when a player comes to a club and does so well there would definately be something there for him. Roques proved to be a phenominal player and for him to say he's not going any where brings a smile to my face. And if he was to leave the last place i'll want him to go to is shityted. Let's hope he scores a few more in our last two games and takes us into the the Intertoto. I wouldnt exactly associate the word 'clown' with Santa.

That is an imposter.

Just seen this morning that Pique could be leaving United. Now he is REAL quality, saw him play for Valencia on loan, he's a quality player now even though he's young, with tonnes of potential. Don't know regarding price range, but would be a TOP signing.

He's a player linked with a return to Barcelona!

If he does move it is unlikely he will stay in England and even if he did, Blackburn would be far behind the likes of Tottenham in the race for his siganture.

Any player even remotely linked with Barcelona will not end up at Blackburn anytime soon.

Keep dreaming...

daniel, I try not to criticise fellow fans on here, but you haven't got a clue, fella. Please don't waste any more of my time - have a good think about Rovers and the way we are (excellently) run, then try to be a bit more thoughtfull in your future posts! No offence fella, please re read this before responding.
You all seem to be having at go because of this post but you've not said what's wrong with it. I think riverside ron has been spot on with what he's said. It's all very well for you to dream up players to come to us but ron has said it how it is. Why the hell would we pay over the odds for a player we don't need, it just doesn't make sense. Hughes is THE shrewdest manager in the league when it comes to transfers so to think he'd blow what limited money he has on 'big' names is absurd.

Hughes said he'd be first in line to sign Giggs and Scholes if they were to go on sale. Does this mean we're getting them both in the summer? No. Giggs would stay to get his appearance record and Scholes would have just played in a champions league final. Sparky trusts the players he's got and therefore won't get rid of any of our main 16 by choice, therefore we wouldn't need to replace them with top 4 rejects.

I like your ambition but I wish you'd all use a bit more common sense!

Oh it's fiesty on here at the moment !!

I have to agree with RON on this. BRFC very rarely dabble in fantasy. The club as to remain well run within it's financial constraints.

MH will surprise us all again in the summer with some very astute signings who will improve the team again.

I am still of the opinion that MH will want to rectify this season with an assault on all fronts 08/09. Obviously he will want to keep his major players & his signings will help to keep them here for 08/09 season. I feel that the speculated players owe us as fans & club another season at least & more importantly, for me MH deserves this from these players.

Vogel will become a major player for BRFC next season because for me you can already see his quality's.
I doubt very much Cruz will have the second season cyndrome,he just seems too level headed & focused.

MH will do us all proud once again.

If we did go in for Justin Hoyte, he would cost £2.5m at the very most .
Diarra and Huth, went for big money as they are experienced, and have played many high profile champions league and premiership games for arsenal and chelsea, as well as being full internationals. I personally think £6m for Diarra is a bargain, the guy is class!

Hoyte on the other hand is a youngster, who hardly ever plays for Arsenal, and is in a similar position their as Bentley was before he signed for us (for £500k).

Im sorry, but to compare Hoyte, to Diarra is rediculous.

good to see some hackles are being raised on here today, Ully dont beat about the bush mate just say what you mean are you getting milder with age?
hughsie has a decent squad as it stands we need a bit more depth to go through a season plus the cup comps so there wont be wholesale changes a couple of incomers and some of the fringe players out.
we have a chance of finishing the season on 61 points and most seasons thats good enough to get you a european spot, sadly this year maybe not. i wouldnt mind having a wager that hughsie at the start of the season had a target of 60.
as rovers fans we have got to be pleased with the season and if we do keep hold of our better players next season will be as good if not better.

anyway time for a catchphrase or two

as far as the seasons concerned didnt we do welland all you posters on here
say what you see it would be better if more of you could
come on down to ewood.

sorry Ully

If man utd does buy santa cruz, i think we should do a player swap. Saha for Santa cruz and maybe abit of cash. Yes i know saha is injury prone but we need pace and flare up forward. Bellamy had that abd he was injury prone as well
