SAM Allardyce could be on his way back into management with Portuguese giants Benfica.

Reports in Lisbon last night tipped the former Wanderers manager as a possible successor to Jose Antonio Camacho, who quit last month.

Manchester City manager, Sven Goran Eriksson, who has twice managed the Eagles and whose future at Eastlands has been thrown into doubt by owner Thaksin Shinawatra, has also been touted as a target, along with current Chelsea manager, Avram Grant, and the Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri also in the frame, according to the Portuguese media.

Fernando Chalana is currently in charge at the Stadium of Light but the Benfica hierarchy are keen to appoint a foreign head coach for next season.

Allardyce, who quit Wanderers a year ago after seven and a half years at the Reebok, has been out of management since leaving Newcastle in January.

that will be long balls and play it down the channels, long throw ins and pro zones. Benfica don't do it. get a manager who insists on possession football, thats the future. have a look at managers such as capello, Klinsmen, Scolari, Rikard, Megson, Ramos to name a few.

Why the blinkin nora would Benfica want Big Sam as manager? Think about it there's no place in Portuguese football for Sam's brand of football no disrespect to the man who did great for us and i still think would do an excellent job in the Prem but in Portugal?? Filling a gap on the page spring to mind?

His agent has apparantly been touting Allerdyce around Europe for a while. Personally, I don't think Benfica will entertain him when you look at the other names in the frame. In fact I'd go as far as to say I'll show my ar3e on the town hall square if it happens!

If somebody offered £5M i would rip their arms off.

In regard to Big Sam - If he got the job at Benfica I will eat my car.

Big Sam is a shamed manager, the way he departed the team last year, could not even see the season out. All the lies (I just need a rest from soccer, not interested in any other club). What was it five days later "O" Newcastle gave me a job. The boast of how Bolton was too small for him. Sam was soon in over his head with the minor stars at New castle. Must have been his strong Bolton accent.
Benfica L.M.A.O.

I'm guessing that you are from the Prairies with that point of view. If that's the case, I'm not surprised that you're outraged after all the snow you've had this week.

It's shirt sleeves in Toronto, and I'd have BSA back in a second.

I agree with Hank:

The truth is Sam Allardyce is an ideal manager for more modest sized Premier League clubs, who don't have a substantial budget. He's good in the transfer market, and really, that's all that matters these days. The last time I heard Allardyce speak (or moan), he had more of a Middlelands' accent, but not Brummie.

I can't believe that Sam is getting so much stick on here. The guy is a legend and whether or not he gets the job, I personally wish him every success and hope he gets a real chance to manage a big side and show his already proved credentials. Sam was given nowhere near enough time with the Geordies and had to rotate all the time due to niggling injuries. It isn't fair to say his stint at Tyneside was a failure. It took 8 years to transform us and Newcastle had one of the worst defences in the league so that would have taken a long time also. I hope BSA gets the job and proves everybody wrong who bizarrely doubts him... I just wish he'd come home. Good luck Sam!

Everyone wants us to go down, so it will feel all the better if we can pull this season out of the flames.

Stick it to Spurs.

Ave it!

Can't see Sam being Benfica's first choice. I reckon it's just bluster so that he can ask for more when the consortium come in to buy BWFC and offer him a job.
Managers seem to 'mention' other job offers when they've got a new job lined up - just an attempt to boost salary demands.

The facts are that Sam did lie said he had been thinking of the way Alan Curbishley had been out of the game for a year and wanted to do the same, when all the time he knew he was on his way to Tyneside.
Perhaps Geordies felt about Sam the same way we do about Megson and just wanted him out.
The last time I saw Sam on TV he was saying he wanted another job in the premier league but not with a club like Bolton he wanted a bigger club(he then said no disrespect) - He did a superb job for us and everyone respected the guy but don't think he would ever come back

Funny how they have stopped leaking goals without signing any new players since Dummy Sam left.
