CAPTAIN Steven Caldwell hopes his first goal for Burnley isn't the only contribution he can make towards the Clarets' play-off push.

The Scotland international sealed a 2-0 win over Coventry City with an 86th minute header to push Owen Coyle's men to within two points off fifth and sixth place in the Championship.

Chris McCann put Burnley in the driving seat with his fifth of the season.

And although Caldwell admitted he was delighted to finally get off the mark, with what was the former Sunderland defender's first goal for over two seasons in total, he admitted wins, regardless of scorers, were more important.

"It was a good feeling. I was obviously delighted to get the second goal - I'm pleased it was me but I couldn't really care who got it to be honest because it's more important for me to be part of a clean sheet," he said.

"I should score a few goals. One season I got five goals and I was delighted with that, but none since until now. Sometimes it works like that.

"Hopefully I can go on a wee run and get a few goals this season and continue to score goals in my Burnley career. But it's not something that I lose sleep over. I try to do my best in the box, if a chance comes to me obviously it's very important. But I was brought here to stop goals and if I'm doing that I'm happy."

He added: "It was a big win for us.

Every game's going to be crucially important now in the run-in.

"It wasn't really fluent stuff from us but it's important that you grind those games out and get the clean sheet, which was the main thing for us tonight, and obviously get a couple of goals as well.

"They've got pace from Michael Mifsud but I think we played him pretty well. He's a quality player, a dangerous player, but I think we defended him quite well.

"A lot of credit goes to Jon Harley who was basically on him for the majority of the game. Thankfully Jon's blessed with a lot of pace where he can combat Mifsud really well."

And manager Coyle was delighted to bounce back from Saturday's defeat at Plymouth Argyle to make up lost ground on the top six.

"I didn't think it was one of our more fluent performances, but the result was all-important tonight," he said.

"We played far better on Saturday and lost at Plymouth, such is the nature of the Championship.

"I thought we deserved to win over the course of the game. Normally I think both teams are attack-minded, they like to get the ball down and play. Whether the wind and the pitch weren't condusive to that I'm not entirely sure but there seemed to be a lot of unforced errors by either side and passes going astray.

"Over the game though I felt we deserved the three points, and they're three important points because it pushes us right to the tail-end of the play-off positions that are much talked about, so we're delighted with that and it sets us up for another home game on Saturday."
