BRENDAN Flood has confirmed caretaker manager Steve Davis is still an option to take charge of Burnley on a permanent basis.

The Clarets operational director admitted the possibility of Davis completing a fast-track into management was played down ahead of his first game in charge at Leicester City on Saturday, with Steve Cotterill's departure coming just a week after Davis was promoted from first team coach to assistant manager.

"He would be considered," confirmed Flood.

"I was questioned last week whether he would or not be offered the job as manager and I think people misconstrued (my answer).

"I think we wanted to take the pressure off him a little bit on Saturday and I think that hopefully has worked, and we'll see whether Steve, after having a few days to think about it, wants to put his name forward, and Steve is deciding on that now.

"We certainly would consider him. He is a hero at Burnley. He is a hero to me.

"In time, whether it's now or in a few years, I'm sure Steve Davis will be manager of Burnley at some time.

Should Davis want to make the step up and take the reins, it appears Saturday's 1-0 win at the Walkers Stadium has strengthened his cause.

"It's difficult to judge a man in such an important position over one game, but none of us can question Steve Davis is a quality man; he's a leader and he's a winner.

"It's just whether he's ready himself to consider himself in that role of being a manager."
