Mike Newell has now emerged as the new bookmakers' favourite to be the next Burnley boss as speculation on who will replace Steve Cotterill hots up.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Everton striker remains out of work after being sacked by Luton Town in March this year.

But the 42-year-old is keen for a return to management and his north west connections may count in his favour as the Clarets look to make an appointment before their next Championship match, against Stoke City on November 24.

And the Lancashire Telegraph understands that Newell has applied for the role.

Steve Davis, Burnley's caretaker manager, is considered second favourite at odds of 10/3.

Paul Jewell, a popular choice among Burnley supporters, remains in the race at 11/2, despite yesterday ruling out a return to his former club Wigan Athletic.

However, after guiding both Bradford City and Wigan into the Premier League it could be considered that he may not wish to go through the process a third time.

Chris Hutchings, who was Jewell's assistant at the JJB Stadium before taking the hotseat on the 43-year-old's departure at the end of last season, may also be interested in the vacancy, following his sacking earlier this month.

Joe Royle, who has pulled out of the race for the vacant managerial role at Leicester City, Peter Reid, Martin Allen and Mike Phelan are among a group of names behind the leading pack, according to online bookmakers skybet.

Stuart Pearce, Stan Ternent, and Simon Grayson are considered long-shots.
