ACCRINGTON Stanley moved to within a point of the League Two title after blowing Wycombe Wanderers away.

The automatic promotion chasing Chairboys started brightly, but were frustrated by two good saves from Aaron Chapman, first from Scott Kashket and then Kayden Jackson broke the deadlock with a gift of a goal in bizarre circumstances on 15 minutes. A mix-up at the back saw the ball released from goalkeeper Scott Brown’s grasp, leaving Jackson with the simplest of tasks to roll the ball into an empty net and give the newly promoted Reds a 1-0 lead with his 16th of the season.

Stanley’s Scott Brown then beat his namesake to double their lead just after the half.

The midfielder had not scored a league goal all season, but picked a great time to break his duck for 2017/18, with a great finish as his left foot volley arrowed past the Wycombe stopper and bulged the net.

Wycombe, who had been forced into a late first half change with Dominic Gape replaced by Randall Williams, made their second substitution at the start of the second half, with Craig Mackail-Smith coming off the bench for Kashket, who had taken a knock in the first half.

But the experienced striker could not have a significant impact for the home side, who did not always play like a side pushing for automatic promotion.

Sean McConville scored the Reds’ third in the 66th minute, slotting home his 13th of the season.

Stanley manager John Coleman had only used 12 players in the previous nine games, but made all three substitutions in the later stages of the game. The first of those, Offrande Zanzala, scored from the spot after earning a stoppage time penalty to wrap things up.

A 1-1 draw for Luton away to Carlisle was enough to secure promotion for the Hatters, with two games to go.

Stanley have three games left and the title race now moves to Tuesday night, when the Reds travel to Newport County.
