JAYSON Leutwiler is hoping for more cup progress with Rovers as he eyes a second appearance in four days at Rochdale tonight.

The Canadian made his Rovers debut in Saturday’s FA Cup win over Barnet and looks set to continue in goal for the Checkatrade Trophy tie at Spotland.

International commitments saw the 28-year-old miss Rovers’ previous two Trophy ties but Rovers boss Tony Mowbray is set to hand him the gloves at Spotland.

And Leutwiler hopes that Rovers can continue their progress in the two competitions.

“If we win we will be definitely through and it could be a good opportunity to go far in this competition,” Leutwiler said of the Checkatrade Trophy tie.

“I was very happy to make my debut in the FA Cup and with a good win. I was happy to start and be part of the team.

“It’s been a little while since I played but I just wanted to enjoy it and stay sharp.

“I’m training every day and trying to do my best and when the right moment comes, it comes.

“I’m not wanting to push for it, it will come up when you deserve it.”

Leutwiler, who has been second choice to David Raya since joining from Shrewsbury in August, missed the win over Stoke City Under-21s and the defeat to Bury after being called up by Canada.

He has been an unused substitute in Rovers’ 15 league games to date, a contrast from last season where he featured in all but four of Shrewsbury’s 53 games.

And while it has been a frustrating time since his move to Ewood, Leutwiler says a chance to settle in at Rovers before making his first-team bow has been beneficial.

He added: “It was a bit frustrating, I should maybe have had my chance earlier, but the national team is something that you can’t refuse.

“I had to wait some time for my opportunity but that helped me to get to know the players a bit, what their strengths are and what I can do for them, and it felt good to go out there.

“I felt I needed time to adapt but I know them all well now.”

Of Saturday’s FA Cup win over Barnet where Rovers recovered from going a goal down to win 3-1, Leutwiler said: “When we scored I thought we were going to go and win the game.

“They dropped back but we kept on playing, moved forward and deserved the win.

“Sometimes it can be a scrappy but we had to go through and we will try and go as far as possible.

“Everyone wants that (to get in to round three), but the priority before that is the league and if we can get through in the FA Cup then it’s a bonus for everyone.”
