SAM Vokes admits he 'never dreamt' he would reach 50 international caps after his achievement was honoured by the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

The Burnley striker hit his half century against Serbia in June and has now won 52 caps for his country as Wales look to secure a play-off spot in World Cup qualifying.

On Saturday the 27-year-old was presented with a framed gold cap to mark his achievement, with FAW representatives Lucy Mason and Lianne Cole making the presentation before the Clarets' goalless draw with Huddersfield.

Vokes is the 38th player to reach 50 caps for Wales and he said it was a mark that had made himself and his family proud.

“It was fantastic to get that 50th cap and this is a really nice way to mark it,” he said.

“I’ve been going nine or 10 years now with the international scene and it’s a massive thing for myself and my family to get that 50th. I never dreamt of it really.

"As the years go on and you start being involved more, it’s something I aimed for and to tick that off away in Serbia was a massive achievement and one I’m very proud of."

Vokes has won 31 of his caps while at Burnley, placing him fifth on the list of the most capped Clarets.

That list is topped by Jimmy McIlroy, who played 51 times for Northern Ireland while at Turf Moor, but Alex Elder and Billy Hamilton (both Northern Ireland) and Brian Flynn (Wales) all won international recognition 34 times while they were at Burnley.

Wales won both their World Cup qualifying fixtures in September to move into second in Group D.

The qualifying process ends in October with Wales travelling to Georgia on October 6 before they host the Republic of Ireland on October 9 in a game that could decide who takes the play-off place.

Vokes is likely to be involved again in that double header as he seeks to add to his eight goals scored for Wales, and he could come up against some of his Clarets teammates in that final fixture, with Stephen Ward, Kevin Long, Jeff Hendrick, Robbie Brady and Jon Walters all Ireland international.
