ROVERS captain Charlie Mulgrew has been named in the Scotland squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Lithuania.

Mulgrew has been called up as part of the 27 man squad for next month’s qualifiers.

The 31-year-old has won 26 caps for his country, and has played the full 90 minutes in each of Scotland’s last three games, including the 2-2 draw with England in June.

Scotland travel to Lithuania on September 1, before hosting Malta on September 4, as they look to book their place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

England top Group F on 14 points from six games, with Scotland six points worse off in fourth.  But they will hope to close the gap on Slovakia in second, and Slovenia in third, who are four and three points ahead of them respectively.

Scotland were 5-1 winners in Malta last September, but needed a last minute goal to rescue a point against Lithuania at Hampden Park in October.

Also included in the squad are former Rovers captain Grant Hanley, and ex-Rover Tom Cairney, however there is no place for Jordan Rhodes in attack.

Mulgrew, who has started all of Rovers’ four matches so far this season, has won 26 caps for his country since his debut in February 2012.

He will link up with his international team-mates after Rovers’ home game with MK Dons on Saturday.
