SAM Vokes praised a collective effort from the Clarets in their opening day win at champions Chelsea after writing his name into the record books.

The Wales striker picked up where he left off last season and his double at Stamford Bridge took him to seven goals in his last six appearances for the club. And the 27-year-old became the first Burnley player to score in four straight Premier League games, while his tally of 12 means he’s now the Clarets’ highest scorer in that competition.

Vokes’ hot streak comes after he’d netted just five goals in his previous 58 top flight appearances, and he said: “I feel good. At the end of last season it was nice to get those goals and secure us staying up and to keep that going was important for me so it was nice to start off that way.

“It’s nice to have that confidence as a striker, you want to be hitting the back of the net and it’s important. Hopefully I can keep that going.

“It’s nice to get those stats on the board. For me it’s important we got the win and as a striker you want to be scoring goals, so to do that and help the team to win is a good day.”

Vokes turned home Matt Lowton’s cross to give Burnley the lead at the Bridge before he headed home Steven Defour’s pin-point delivery just before the break to give the Clarets a barely believable 3-0 lead.

Defour came through 75 minutes against Chelsea and Vokes hailed the quality the Belgium international can bring to the team in a stylish midfield three alongside Jack Cork and Jeff Hendrick.

“I got on the end of it but you see the play before hand and the way we move the ball around the pitch and the quality we’ve got in Defour and others. I’ll stay central and he put it on a sixpence,” Vokes said of the assist.

“He’s a top class player, he’s been brilliant for us. He played in bits last year, (on Saturday) he showed his class and that ball for me was fantastic.”

Having featured in a two-man attack for much for his Clarets career Vokes was back to leading the line on his own on Saturday as Sean Dyche reverted to a 4-4-1-1 formation.

“It’s something we’re getting used to a as a team,” Vokes said of the shift. “It’s about being able to adapt it. We’ve got some strong midfielders in there and there’s a lot of competition for places now.

“Whether I’m playing in a two or a one I know my job well so I’ll do that for the team.”

The shock win at the home of the champions ended a dramatic week for Burnley, with Andre Gray’s £18million move to Watford meaning the Clarets had lost him and Michael Keane from last year’s squad.

But while both will be a miss Vokes believes the strength of the squad at Turf Moor can cope with the departures.

“We’ll miss those two, they were fantastic for us, but the squad moves on and the games keep coming,” he added.

“We’ll deal with that and there’s no better way to start.”
