ROVERS boss Tony Mowbray is looking for his side to be as flexible as possible having gone with three at the back at York City on Tuesday.

Mowbray watched his side run out 8-0 winners at Bootham Crescent and they are in action again this evening when they travel to Morecambe (7.30pm).

The head coach used the system to good effect at the end of last season, but had gone with a back four in Rovers’ opening two friendlies against Barrow and Sparta Prague.

But Mowbray believes having a number of systems available is essential if Rovers are to challenge for immediate promotion back to the Championship.

“We are still light on numbers, but once everyone is in we will try and find the best balance,” Mowbray said.

“If we have three strikers that are our three best players then we have to get them on the pitch and find a way of working behind the ball.

“If there’s one striker and a lot of number 10s then we have to find of playing.

“We know how hard every game is and we have another tough test against Morecambe.”

Mowbray named a different team in each half of the opening friendly against Barrow on July 8 which Rovers won 2-1.

The 11 players who started the 1-0 defeat to Sparta Prague in Salzburg all got an hour under their belts, while the rest of the squad were given similar minutes against York City on Tuesday.

Craig Conway missed the 8-0 win as a precaution, with a tight hamstring, and will be assessed before a decision is made on whether he features at the Globe Arena.

Dominic Samuel is unlikely to feature, after signing from Reading on Wednesday, and only trained with his team-mates for the first time yesterday.

Darragh Lenihan and Elliott Bennett are the two players to have completed 90 minutes so far in pre-season, and Mowbray is looking to ensure everyone is given equal game time in the early weeks of pre-season.

Trialist Joe Nuttall, a second half substitute against York, may also be given further chance to impress as he looks to earn a deal, having scored five times in two Under-23 appearances so far.

Rovers impressed in a back three against the National League North side earlier this week, with Mowbray taking plenty of positives from the display.

He added: “As I’ve said before they are just pre-season games, we have to try and apply the way we play to every match really.

“We had to concentrate against a pretty physical front line that they had at times.

“We moved the ball well, we created chances, and we scored goals.

“There were lots of positives all over the pitch.”

Tickets, which are available on the gate for tonight’s game, are priced at £10 for adults, £8 for concessions, £6 for 18-23 year-olds and £3 for Under-18s.
