CLARETS chairman Mike Garlick has revealed that Burnley are set to break the bank in this summer’s transfer window.

Garlick said the budget this summer was higher than it was a year ago as Sean Dyche’s side look to strengthen their squad and consolidate their position in the Premier League.

And the Turf chief reiterated the club’s strong position should clubs come in for any of their star players - with Michael Keane attracting plenty of interest. Garlick said the 24-year-old, who is entering the final year of his contract, would only leave Turf Moor if an offer deemed good enough for the club was received.

Regardless of what happens with Keane, Burnley look set to surpass the £32million they spent this season, with the wage budget also likely to rise.

“There’s a higher budget available for player signings. Will the wage budget be higher? It’s not likely to come down,” he said.

“In terms of fees, transfer fees, there’s probably more money available for next season than there was last.

“You would hope because there’s more money available we could improve slightly on where we are.”

Burnley broke their transfer record three times in the 2016/17 campaign with the additions of Steven Defour, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady.

And Garlick believes the club is now an even more attractive proposition than it was 12 months ago thanks to Premier League survival and a £10.6million training ground development.

“The training ground should have a big impact but also just surviving and staying in the Premier League,” he added.

“Last summer everyone had written us off before we’d kicked a ball, now people are thinking, ‘Burnley, hang on, they did well, they stayed there, they were out of the bottom three for nearly all of the season’, so that’s going to have a positive impact on our recruitment, for sure.”

While new faces are a certainty departures also look likely. Keane has just a year remaining on his contract and most of the Premier League’s top seven have been linked with bids in excess of £25million for the England international.

But Garlick insists Burnley would happily reject any offers and let Keane leave for free in 12 months if they didn’t meet the club’s asking price, with the prize for another season of Premier League football far greater than any potential transfer fee.

“Let’s roll it forward a year, what’s the prize for staying up again? Another £120-130m?,” the Turf chairman said.

“So if we miss out on one or two fees and get that, I know what I’d take.

“The most important thing for the fans to know is that we don’t actually have to sell any player.

“Going forward it’s got to be on our terms and terms that are right for us. Do we need to sell anyone? No. If we want to keep players, we’ll keep them.”

Garlick accepts that Burnley’s survival in the Premier League will inevitably lead to players being linked with a move away, but he said there had not yet been any ‘formal’ interest in any of the Clarets’ star names.

“It’s part of the business and it comes with the territory of being a successful team that has an impact in the Premier League which is what we’ve done,” he said of the transfer speculation.

“It’s bound to attract attention. Right now there’s a lot of noise out there from the media but we haven’t had any formal interest in anyone.”
