SEAN McConville has warned League Two that Accrington Stanley will come back stronger next year after seeing their slim hopes of promotion fade after defeat at Newport County last week.

The Reds need to win their final two games to have a chance of making the play-offs, and then hope several other results to go their way.

McConville admits there will be a feeling of 'what if?' among the squad if they don't make the top seven ahead of Saturday's home clash with Luton Town.

But with most of the Wham Stadium squad now tied to longer contracts the 28-year-old believes promotion is well within Stanley's sights next season.

"It’s probably the first year the gaffer has had the luxury of not being stressed out on holiday and trying to sort contracts, because I think there’s only two or three out of contract," the winger said.

"He’ll be able to enjoy his summer instead of worrying about whether lads or signing or moving, the only worry he’ll have is people coming in for players, because we’ve got lads who could kick on and they would demand a fee.

McConville added: "We lost nine players last summer, so to build a new team, to train with them, to get to know characters and how players play is tough.

"Sometimes it will just click but invariably you’ll have a run like we had in December where it will start going wrong.

"The more you work with players in training and get to know them and they get to know the club, it works itself out, and you can see that from our performances since December.

"If we carry on this form into next year with the bulk of this squad I’m certain we can push for promotion next year."

Stanley will target a maximum haul from their final two games and will see where that takes them.

"Stranger things have happened," McConville said of the Reds' slim play-off hopes.

"We’ve got to play the game Saturday, take three points and then we’ll sit in the changing room and see, either we’ll have a little sneak going to Stevenage next week or we haven’t."

McConville has had a successful season on a personal level and he remains top of the assists chart in League Two.

And he believes those displays have helped him win over the Wham Stadium crowd.

"It’s probably been my most consistent season. I’ve enjoyed it and I want to finish it with maybe a couple more assists and a goal," he said.

"It’s performances isn't it? I’m a football fan myself and when you’re not playing well fans do get on your back, but when you’re playing well they will support you and this season I think my performances as a whole have been really good."
