STEVEN Defour is touch and go to be fit for Burnley's Premier League clash with Sunderland on Saturday.

The Belgium international came through 70 minutes in a friendly against North American Soccer League side FC Edmonton during the week and Clarets chief Sean Dyche said the 28-year-old had come through the run out at Gawthorpe well.

"Steven Defour will be touch and go, not fitness wise, but he’s just played 70 minutes in a reasonably long period and that’s it," he said.

"So we’ll make a judgement call on him. But he came through that well, so we’re pleased with that."

But Dyche revealed Iceland winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson had seen a specialist as the knee injury he sustained in the FA Cup defeat to Lincoln City refuses to settle down.

"Johann, unfortunately, is still struggling with a niggly medial knee ligament injury, and it’s not settled down as quickly as we’d hoped," he said.

"But he has seen a specialist and he’s not worried about it. He says it’s just one of those things. It’s just taking a bit longer than hoped."

Asked if Burnley had missed Defour and Gudmundsson, Dyche said: "It’s a strange one, because the results don’t necessarily suggest that.

But you want strength in depth, not just the first 11. I’m a big believer in how our substitutions can affect a game.

"So it’s hard to define on the stats, but we missed the fact that they’re not in the training group, we missed the fact that they’re not there, whether they’re starting, whether they’re coming off the bench to add to the quality of the team, so I think that’s the bigger picture of it."
