BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche refused to criticise his much-changed side after they were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Accrington - but he was unhappy with two tackles at the Wham Stadium.

The Clarets have now fallen at this stage of the competition for three years running after Reds full-back Matty Pearson scored in the final minute of extra-time to send his side through.

Dyche made 10 changes from the team that beat Liverpool 2-0 on Saturday, with only Sam Vokes surviving.

But he said he was pleased with the performance of his fringe stars afterwards, and instead turned the spotlight on challenges from Stanley's Sean McConville on teenage midfielder Aiden O'Neill and on full-back Tendayi Darikwa from Reds sub Paddy Lacey.

Dyche said: "I was really pleased with the performance in general.

"In cup games you always get a team who find a chance and they found probably two.

"The main thing I'm really pleased about is that one of my young players didn't come away with a broken leg. I've seen a ridiculous challenge which is a red card immediately.

"There's a two-footed tackle in the second half let go. I'm amazed by the referee, but that's part and parcel of the game."

When asked for his response, Reds boss John Coleman said: "If the referee had done his job and given the foul on Shay McCartan in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about that.

"It was a poor challenge but I don't think there's any malice in it.

"The referee let too many things go tonight. There were a couple of really nasty challenges. If we're talking about reds, there could easily be reds for them as well."
