SOME of Burnley’s young stars could feature again tonight as the Clarets head to the seaside for their second pre-season friendly of the summer.

Sean Dyche’s side face Morecambe at the Globe Arena (7.30pm) as they step up their preparations ahead of the Premier League kick-off on August 13.

Of the 24 players who travelled to Evian, only young goalkeeper Tony Aghayere and central defender Tom Anderson did not feature in the friendly win against Stade Nyonnais on Friday night.

Full-back Cameron Dummigan and central midfielder Aiden O’Neill both started in Switzerland, and with returning Euro 2016 pair Tom Heaton and Stephen Ward only back in training this week some of the youngsters could be involved again this evening.

Northern Ireland goalkeeper Conor Mitchell was also part of the squad on the shores of Lake Geneva, replacing Paul Robinson for the final half hour at the Stade de Colovray, and Dyche believes spending nearly a week on tour with the first team can only have helped the academy starlets.

“It’s superb, it always is for young players, coming on tour,” said Dyche. “Some of our young players are moving forward in Tom and Cammy, they went on loan last year so they understand a bit more about first-team football, so they will mature from that and from being part of the group.”

It was a memorable week for Australian midfielder O’Neill, who signed a three-year deal with the Clarets while in Evian-les-Bains, with the club having an option for a further year.

The 18-year-old joined Burnley in 2014 after leaving Brisbane Athletic, and he trained regularly with the first team on a regular basis last season.

And Dyche was pleased with the way O’Neill handled himself during his stay with the first team, and revealed he was one of a few of the Clarets youngsters that senior staff were keeping an eye on.

“We like Aiden, there’s a few we like, I’ve said over the last year we’ve got our eye on a couple of the younger players and how they’re doing,” said the Clarets chief.

“They need time yet but they’re showing good signs. Aiden has handled himself very well.

“He trained a lot with us last year. Being in the first-team group is not something that’s a surprise to him.”

Twenty-two-year-old Anderson, 22, also signed a new Turf Moor deal last week, extending his stay for a further two years.

He impressed on loan for League One side Chesterfield in the second half of last season.

While Heaton and Ward are back in the fray this week after an extra two weeks off, tonight’s trip to the coast is likely to come too soon for them to feature, and Wales striker Sam Vokes is still a week away from returning to pre-season training.

The Shrimps hosted a three-team tournament on Saturday with Blackburn Rovers and Bury, with matches taking place over an hour.

Jim Bentley’s side were held to a goalless draw by Rovers but were comfortable 4-0 victors over Bury in their second encounter.
