LAURA Massaro produced another famous comeback to beat Raneem El Welily and win the end of season PSA Dubai World Series Finals.

The 32-year-old twice trailed against the talented Egyptian before sealing a thrilling 9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 12-10, 11-5 victory and collect the biggest prize in the history of women's squash - with the $42,750 purse equal to that won by men's winner Gregory Gaultier.

It capped a remarkable season for the Chorley star who won back to back PSA Tour titles at the end of 2015 and, in January, became world number one for the first time in her career.

Massaro, who also reached the PSA Women's World Championship in April and helped England retain the European Team title earlier this month, hailed her season as one of the best ever.

“It has definitely been one of the most memorable and becoming world number one for the first time in my career is something I will never forget," said Massaro. "I have probably played my most consistent squash as well.

“The 2013/14 season is probably my best as I won the World Championship and British Open but this ranks up there alongside it.”

Victory over El Welily sealed an impressive week's squash for Massaro who beat Nouran Gohar, Nicol David and Amanda Sobhy in her group then defeated world number one Nour El Sherbini in the semi final's - avenging that World Championship final defeat in Kuala Lumpur.

"I'm so pleased with my form all week," added Massaro.

"It was really tough coming off the back of a loss at the World Championship, and it was a big effort to keep training after that. I'm just so pleased that it's paid off - you go through so much pain and hard work as a squash player. Moments like this make it all worth it.

"I told myself it was the final match of the season, and coming on for that fifth game I just told myself there was one game to go and I'm so pleased to come through in the end. To have equal prize money for the women and to be on an level par with the men in these big events now, the women feel like we deserve it, and I hope that today showed that we do."

Meanwhile, Gaultier, winner of the 2008 and 2009 versions of the tournament, saw off the challenge of surprise finalist Cameron Pilley in a commanding 3-1 victory.
