ROSS Etheridge has left Accrington Stanley to sign a two-year deal with Doncaster Rovers.

The goalkeeper, who played a key role in the Reds run to the League Two play-offs this season, had been offered a contract to remain at the Wham Stadium but has opted to make the switch to the Keepmoat Stadium.

Doncaster, managed by Darren Ferguson, will face Stanley next season after suffering relegation from League One last year.

The 21-year-old will officially join Doncaster on July 1 and Accrington will be due compensation for the stopper as he is under the age of 24 and was offered a new contract.

Etheridge's departure means the Reds are currently without a goalkeeper after releasing Jason Mooney this week.

John Coleman's side currently have just four first team players under contract.

Etheridge made 24 appearances for Stanley this season after dislodging Mooney as the club's number one in January. The former Derby County trainee kept nine clean sheets.

And his new boss Ferguson is delighted to have secured his signature.

“He was very good for Accrington, helping to get them into the play-offs,” said Ferguson.

“Ross has loads of potential, he is a good size and a good kicker of the ball.

“He has loads of improvement in him so we are delighted to get him on board for next season.

“It is important we get players who understand the league and players who are real quality in the league and Ross ticks that box.

“Ross played a large part in Accrington’s success last season and I’m delighted that myself and the board have been able to get him and our other two signings to date over the line.”
