SAM Vokes believes he has ‘unfinished business’ in the Premier League as he prepares for a return to the top flight with Burnley next season.

Vokes missed the first half of the Clarets’ last Premier League campaign as he recovered from the cruciate knee ligament injury that saw him miss the end of the 2013/14 promotion season.

Although he was back in action on Boxing Day of the top flight season, when he came on against Liverpool at Turf Moor, he spent most of the next five months battling his way back to full fitness.

Vokes started five Premier League games in 2014/15, coming off the bench a further 10 times, but his only goal was in the FA Cup against Tottenham.

He has returned to form this season though, ending with 16 goals and scoring the goal that secured promotion against Queens Park Rangers and the opener in the title-clinching win at Charlton.

The Wales international wants to take that form into the Premier League next season, and asked if he feels he has unfinished business with the top flight, he said: “I do yes, on a personal note and as a squad.

“It was tough getting relegated last year but to bounce back as we have and to get promoted as champions is amazing. You don’t see many teams do it. It’s tough to come back down and do that.”

Vokes struck 12 times in his final 21 games this season to prove he is back to full fitness after that knee injury suffered against Leicester at Turf Moor in March 2014.

“Although it was nine months on the pitch I think it took a good 18 months for myself to get back to where I feel I’m back to now,” he added.

“Hopefully I’ll have a good summer and get ready to come back and go again in pre-season.”

Vokes is still looking for his first Premier League goal, having also made 11 substitute appearances for Wolves across three seasons from 2009-2012.

He netted 20 Championship goals in 2013/14 but having helped the Clarets to the title this time around he believes this promotion tops that unexpected success two years ago.

“It puts the shine on it,” Vokes said of lifting the Championship trophy.

“It was a great achievement two years ago - we were a different kind of team then. We were underdogs but this year we were very much the favourites I suppose in this league and it’s a different kind of pressure.

“We brought lads in who knew what they were coming into, they’ve bought into the way we work and it’s obviously worked.

“The squad mentality has come all the way through. Although players have changed the mentality is still there and you can see that in how we work and that’s why we get those results.

“We lost some great players who have gone on to great things.

“We replaced them with some great talent and they’ve come in and done a great job for us. It’s the reason we are where we are.”
