I REALLY think Burnley should offer Joey Barton the two-year deal he wants to keep him at Turf Moor and out of the clutches of Rangers.

It would be a huge blow if he left, probably the second biggest the club could possibly suffer below a situation where the manager left.

A lot of people have said we’re not a one-man team, but for me he’s pulled the midfield through this season and he’s been the biggest factor in the Clarets doing well.

He’s organised and led by example, and without him I don’t think we’d have been anywhere near the top.

Last year he was in the ‘last chance saloon’ and he was happy just to take a year, but now he’s shown the world what he can do.

He’s not a spring chicken any more, but he’s at that age where he deserves a two-year deal.

There will be suitors out there, like Rangers, who will offer him that, and I think that’s thoroughly deserved for what he’s put in this year. I have said that I think it will be a bit of a challenge for Joey in the Premier League next year.

This season has gone well for him, but next year might not be as rosy.

When you’re going away from home and not picking up as many points as they have done this year, he might get frustrated, we might see the old Joey - who knows?

That might be a deciding factor in his decision. Does he go and play in the Scottish Premiership instead of the English Premier League.

It’s not nice, because I had it in my career, that you get a one-year deal. You want a bit of security and you want to feel loved by the club.

He’s put in a good shift this year and he’s been awarded player of the year, and the club should turn around and say, ‘Here you go, here’s a two-year deal’.

He won’t be on a king’s ransom and they can afford it. Sometimes Burnley have to take that gamble and take that next step.

On a more positive note, I’m delighted that Tom Heaton has been selected for England’s Euro squad. He is one of England’s best.

OK, he might not get to play, but it gets you experience and hopefully he will come back an even better player.

It’s good that someone in the Championship has been given that chance and good that Roy has been brave enough to go with someone who’s playing ever so well.
