CLARETS captain Tom Heaton has insisted the job is not done for Burnley as he urges his teammates to go out and win the Championship title this Saturday.

Sean Dyche’s side confirmed their place in the Premier League for next season on Monday with a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers.

But victory over Charlton at the Valley this weekend will guarantee them the title and ensure they go one better than two years ago, when a points tally of 93, which can be matched with victory in south London, was only good enough for second place.

“The job’s not done. We’re pleased with getting to the Premier League but we want to win the league,” said Heaton, who kept a 19th clean sheet of the season on Monday, matching his tally from 2013/14.

“We want to finish it right and that’s imperative this week, we’ll get back in and get ready to go again Saturday.

“(The title) is massively important to us. That’s the goal we set out and we want to achieve that.

“There’s still a job to be done, we want to finish top of the pile. There’s still talk of it in the dressing room straight after the QPR game, we want to make sure we go and finish it right.”

Heaton has been an ever-present this season and he missed just 34 minutes of the promotion season in 2013/14 after his red card at Brighton.

And the stopper agrees with Dyche that the achievement of going up this time around has been better.

“The manager said it’s better this time around and I tend to agree with him, it’s been tougher.” he said. “First time around we were going on emotion and had the momentum and there was more of a gap.

“This time around a few things went against us in terms of results. Even if we didn’t go about it the way we do, and the way the manager sets the stall out, it could have undone us, but we stood strong and we’ve got there.”

He added: “It’s an incredible achievement (to bounce straight back). It probably started from when we were relegated last year.

“The manager talked about setting the right mentality in the last three games going forward and we finished pretty strongly. There was a good feel.

“It was a good summer, everyone was ready to go. We started ok, we didn’t start great, but we found our legs after Boxing Day and it’s taken us forward.”

Heaton also praised goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer and boss Dyche for helping him improve since he made the switch to Turf Moor at the start of the 2013/14 season.

The 30-year-old nearly joined Dyche at Watford but the move fell through when the manager lost his job at Vicarage Road, and Heaton is now counting his blessings.

Since his move to Burnley he has started 129 consecutive league games and worked his way into the England squad.

“Working closely with Billy Mercer the goalkeeping coach has made me better every day, I can’t thank him enough,” he said.

“The manager took me here, I’m absolutely delighted I made that decision, he has made me better and I keep wanting to improve.”
