WHAT usually happens when you come up against your former club is you either have a nightmare or you have a great game and, if you’re a striker, get a goal. You rarely have an average game. Tomorrow I just hope Jordan Rhodes has a nightmare.

Don’t me wrong, I’m a big fan of Jordan Rhodes. It’s just I don’t want him doing well at the Riverside tomorrow.

But I have to say what a great player he was for Blackburn. He was a real natural goalscorer and, certainly in his first season, he almost singlehandedly kept the club in the Championship.

His goals were absolutely vital and his boots are going to take some filling.

It’s going to be very hard to find another player who will guarantee you 20 goals a season, so what Paul Lambert must hope is that the strikers he has brought in, like Danny Graham and Tony Watt, can get 10 to 15 each.

There’s been many a time in the past when Jordan could have moved on and there was only so long you could keep saying to him, like I have, just give it another season.

Okay, he’s not gone to a Premiership club but he’s gone to a Championship one who are ambitious and who have an excellent chance of getting there this season.

The money Blackburn have received should also allow Paul to strengthen the squad and hopefully turn it into one that can challenge at the top of the league.

But Paul is going to need help. It’s a big job he’s got on his hands and that’s why I hope the club replace Derek Shaw pretty quickly.

The transfer window may have closed but there’s the loan window coming up, there are contracts to be sorted and there’s the everyday running of the football club.

You can’t expect the owners to do that from India. You’ve got to have someone at Ewood who is experienced, who knows the business, and ideally, the club.
