SPANISH star Jordi Gomez had no hesitation in dropping down from the Premier League once Blackburn Rovers came calling.

And the Rovers new boy insists his past experience of the Championship will enable him to hit the ground running.

Gomez became Paul Lambert’s sixth and final signing of the transfer window when he made a late deadline-day beating loan move from Sunderland.

The former Swansea City and Wigan Athletic midfielder was only made aware of Rovers boss Lambert’s interest at 4pm on Monday.

But, desperate for game time having fallen out of favour at Sam Allardyce’s Sunderland, Gomez did not have to think twice.

The 30-year-old immediately set off in his car to Brockhall where, 40 minutes before the transfer window shut, he signed a deal tying him to Rovers until the end of the campaign.

“It was late in the afternoon when I got the call,” said Gomez, who came through the Barcelona youth ranks before making his name in England with Swansea and Wigan, where he won the FA Cup in 2013.

“I had no time to think about it but sometimes that’s good. I said yes straightaway as I see this is as a great opportunity for me.

“This is a great club and I can’t wait to start training and start playing.”

Gomez was named in the 2008-09 Championship team of the year when he was at Swansea and he was named Wigan’s player of the year in their first season following relegation from the top flight in 2013.

“Playing in the Championship is not a problem for me,” said the set-piece specialist, who opened the scoring for Wigan in their thrilling 3-3 home draw with 10-man Rovers in November 2011.

“I’ve played in it in the past, I like the league and how it is, so for that reason it is no problem for me to come down a league.

“I’ve done well in this division before and hopefully I can do the same at Blackburn.”

Gomez signed a three-year deal with Sunderland after his contract at Wigan expired in the summer of 2014.

But, after scoring six goals in 33 games in his debut season with the Black Cats, he has made just six appearances in the current campaign.

But Gomez, whose last competitive outing came on Boxing Day, said: “I am feeling fit.

“I haven’t been playing as many games as a footballer wants to play but I’ve been training every day and hopefully I can show I am ready.”

Lambert is weighing up whether to play Gomez as part of a midfield two or an attacking three behind a central striker.

But the player himself said: “It’s up to the manager where he plays me.

“During my career I’ve played in different positions in midfield and wherever he plays me I’ll be happy with that and I’ll do my best.”

Gomez is in line to make his debut in Saturday’s trip to Middlesbrough who signed Rovers top-scorer Jordan Rhodes on deadline day.

And, ahead of the instant reunion with £11m Rhodes, Gomez said: “Jordan has been a very important player for Blackburn in the last three years but now he’s gone to Middlesbrough so we need to try to get results without him.

“I’m sure we can do that and hopefully we’ll start on Saturday.”

Gomez will be able to play in Rovers’ FA Cup fifth-round tie at home to West Ham United or Liverpool having not featured in Sunderland’s third-round defeat at holders Arsenal.
