IT HAS been a week of mixed fortunes for Burnley defender Kevin Long following his loan move to Barnsley.

The defender got off to a great start by scoring a late winner at Oldham on Saturday, where the Tykes triumphed 2-1.

But he was involved in late drama of a different kind on Tuesday night when he was shown a straight red card.

Barnsley were trailing 3-2 at Peterborough, having just clawed their way back into the game through Sam Winnall, when Long was sent off for a lunge on Harry Beautyman.

Tykes boss Lee Johnson said of the incident: “I’ve been there as a player and you’re stretching and committed, showing the world you want to win. I don’t know if he left the ground, I’ll have to have a look.”

Long is now facing a three-match ban in what was initially just a one-month loan, meaning he will miss League One games at home to Sheffield United and away to Colchester either side of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie at Wigan Athletic.

Long does not have the best disciplinary record on loan.

In his first spell with neighbours Accrington Stanley in 2010 he was sent off just 17 minutes into his debut.

In the Irishman’s second season with the Reds in 2011/12 he was red carded in the last minute of a goalless draw at Barnet.

Long had gone to Barnsley to improve his match fitness after recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained on his Premier League debut with Burnley last season.
