Nolan's plea for unity

KEVIN Nolan has made an impassioned plea for unity at the Reebok in the wake of Sam Allardyce's departure.

The Wanderers captain has responded angrily to almost daily speculation that star players will follow the former manager out of the exit door and has called on supporters to rally to the cause and pack the Reebok for next Sunday's crucial final game against Aston Villa.

Victory for the Whites will secure UEFA Cup qualification and, although Nolan is confident the season will end on a high, he believes the fans can play a vital part.

But his biggest concern is that repeated rumours of players wanting to get away is threatening the stability and continuity of purpose new manager Sammy Lee is aiming to instil.

Nicolas Anelka has repeatedly been tipped to be a summer target for Italian giants, Juventus.

There have also been reports quoting El-Hadji Diouf saying he knows clubs in Germany, Italy, Spain and France are interested in signing him while reports in Spain claim Ivan Campo will join Athletic Bilbao this summer. Nolan has even found his own name touted in the tabloids with reports claiming he has been offered for sale at £5million.

But he responded with an emotional appeal for calm after Lee's reign as manager got off to a disappointing start at West Ham on Saturday.

"A lot of people have been speculating that I am leaving and that there are three or four other players leaving, and it's not very nice to hear," Nolan said reacting to the 3-1 defeat left Wanderers still needing a win to be sure of qualifying for Europe.

"I don't like hearing that people are talking about wanting to leave. If they want to leave then keep it quiet and, when they want to go, just go.

"It's not nice for Sammy, it's not nice for the players and it disrupts the dressing room. I'd like to hear them saying it, because, if I did, I'd pin them up myself.

"But I don't think anyone has said it. I know the lads and I'm sure the lads will stick together.

"We all want to be celebrating Europe and I'm sure every player who gets us into Europe is going to want to be here next season."

Nolan was hit harder than most by the departure of sional career. Allardyce, the only manager he has played for in his professional career. But he says, if he is keen to put the disappointment behind him, so should others.

"Big Sam was like a father figure to me," he said. "But that's gone now and I've got to get over it. Sammy's been absolutely fantastic with me, ever since he came into the club. I know he can do as good a job as Sam Allardyce has done and, hopefully, keep us going in the right direction, forward.

"Things change and you have to get over these things and I'm sure we all will.

"It's going to take time but it's not about Big Sam and me or our relationship with the old gaffer, it's about our relationship with the new gaffer and, since Sammy Lee has come in, it's been fantastic.

"He's handled it really well. It's a tough job to fill but I think he can do it and I'm 110 per cent behind him."

Wanderers missed the chance to secure their European qualification at a highly-charged Upton Park. But, with Portsmouth and Reading losing, they know their destiny is in their own hands and a win over Aston Villa will guarantee a UEFA Cup place.

Nolan is confident they can end the season on a high but says a packed Reebok will be a major boost.

"Hopefully, we can get 28,000 there on Sunday because we're going to need our 12th man," he added.

"We want to see that support behind us and we want to show them why we deserve to be in Europe. This is going to be like a cup final for us.

"We should have been home and dry by now and had the cigars out, but it hasn't worked out that way.

"We will get there, though, and a lot of it will be down to Big Sam. But he's gone now and we've got to forget about him. It's all about us now with Sammy Lee as the figurehead of our club."

El-Hadji Diouf and Nicky Hunt are ruled out of the Villa game with injury, Diouf failing to recover from a hamstring injury and Hunt still struggling with a calf strain.

Abdoulaye Faye has recovered from an infected toe which has kept him out of the last three games.

If you played like you talked you would be a decent player Nolan, but this season you have been terrible!.If any club offered £5m for you i would deliver you myself, you are not mobile enough & are has fast as a donkey on Blackpool beach.Tal has more ability than Nolan but for some reason is not liked at Bolton, cant wait for the retained list this summer!.

Bite their hand off for £5 mill.

Agree with above, he seems a great talker off the field but hopeless on it. All the stuff a few weeks ago about curbing his tongue with refs- booked again for dissent.

Worst captain I've known.Agree that Tal has not had a fair deal. Very creative but not the average workhorse Sammy likes.
I'll give Sammy another 6 games. No presence at all for a Prem manager. Another Les Reed, Roeder type.

Nows not the time to start having a pop at the team, club or any individual (that can wait :-P). Lets all get behind the team this week and on Sunday for one last push and secure that European place

Your all talk Nolan and no action. Your performances this season have been dreadful, and you should be opening your mouth to the players NOT the referee. Dont think you should be in a bolton shirt nevermind CAPTAIN wat a joke. You want the fans to perform. Lets see you and certain others do it on the field. Remember WE THE FANS pay your wages.

ANOTHER JOEY BARTON I SEE.

Nolan you are a disgrace in a Bolton Shirt and we are going to boo you at every match.

Don't you dare threaten the Bolton Fans for their opinions.

They paid good money to keep you in a Job....they are entitled... despite you playing like a wet defender in Sunday league .

If we pay the wages mate we are entitled to our opinion so stick your comments where the sun doesn't shine.

Just been reading the B.E.N. and what a yes man Nolan is. He reckons someone has been after him for 5 million, what a joke. He is not even worth 1 million. If I was sammy lee I would get rid of him and he only got Captains job as he was big sams mate, as he certainly didn't get it for his performances, so dont be conned by Nolan If he was that good Teams would be after him and he would be off like a shot. Can Nolan let the supporters know what teams are supposed to be after him especally the one offering the 5 million. As for playing for England like I said before that will never happen I think he is living in cloud cukoo land.

to the sth who wrote that Nolan had said fans couln't comment on how they play and that he now wouldn't renew-where did Nolan say that?Have read the article time and time again-it says for the players to shut up if they are mouthing it, not the fans.I don't think even Nolan is that stupid, i agree with all the other comments re his performance this year, and he should never have been captain. But i for one will be cheering the whites on, and that means all of them on Sunday,if people are already deciding to boo-why bother? That means you have a closed negative mind-stay at home and think of more rubbish to fill the column with.

Comment for Mr Upton-where did kevin Nolan threaten Bolton fans?? Read the article carefully and let your brain work it out....i like the prev two comments think he was talking about the players not the fans.get your facts rights and stop trying to stir things.

You can blame Nolan all you like, but I would shoulder most of the blame on big Sam. He did not need to leave the club 3 matches before the end of the season. He has been a super manager but his timing was terrible. No way should he should have gone at such a vital time of the season. We should have been home and dry now with regards to getting into UEFA cup. Sam and Gartside knew two weeks before he left so why not wait another two weeks and then go. I think there is more to the BIG sam exit than meets the eye ! Just hope the team can get through this last game and get us into the UEFA cup and we can sort out the team comings and goings over the close season. Come On your whites !!!

Whatever happened to Sam's City job that Ian Upton was so certain about?

BTW the fans contribute to the player's wages but television monies actually pay the biggest proportion. In reality, we fans are bit part players...until the stadiums empty and TV abandons the game.

I agree. Win at home to get in Europe - a lot of other teams would love to be in our position. Get behind YOUR team, back them 100%. If a player is having a bad spell then that is the time to start singing his name. Whilst I'm sure Kevin Nolan would admit this has not been his best season, I do believe he gives 100% effort every game - and he is still a quality player. The abuse some Bolton fans seem to direct at our own players is unbelievable. Stop barracking Bolton players - support your team
C'mon you whites

Pedro, Bolton says...

Of COURSE there is a good reason why Sam left with two games to go. It will come out in time. That is now history unfortunately.

In the meantime GET BEHIND YOUR TEAM, cheer like hell on SUNDAY!!!! They NEED our help not ABUSE. Come on you Whitemen!
