SO FAR as Burnley Football Club and transfer windows go, the one just gone surely has to be noted as the most memorable of recent times.

It certainly bests their last couple of efforts in the market, both of which are probably most kindly described as underwhelming.

MORE TOP STORIES:

As well as demolishing their own transfer record and recruiting one of the game’s more colourful characters, there was also the curious case of Jelle Vossen who managed just 56 days and five appearances before deciding, along with Mrs. V, that the pull of home and family was simply too strong to resist.

Still, it’s not like the Belgian was the only striker in the headlines this window. As well as bringing in forwards who are first-team ready in Rouwen Hennings and Andre Gray, there is evidence of long-term planning with the captures of Daniel Agyei, and Chris Long.

That said, Long may find that his chance comes around sooner than expected. With Marvin Sordell being deemed surplus to requirements and Lukas Jutkiewicz the latest Claret to fall victim to the curse of the cruciate, Burnley find themselves less well-off for forwards than a few weeks ago.

But although the Clarets give the impression of being reasonably well-stocked on the goal-scoring front, the same boast cannot be made for other departments.

It is, for example, hard to escape that nagging feeling that we are still waiting for Jason Shackell’s replacement to arrive. Michael Duff has started the season well but cannot defy time indefinitely. And while it’s great Burnley have a genuine goal-threat from corners, Michael Keane is still learning his defensive trade.

Another area where Burnley might have brought in reinforcements is out wide. Michael Kightly does a great job in moving the Clarets up the pitch, but the quality of his final ball is not always impressive. Meanwhile on the opposite flank, George Boyd seems to have gone from a hard runner with a bit of flair and invention to simply a hard runner. Hopefully, the inclusion of Joey Barton in a central role should help mitigate matters by allowing Scott Arfield to revert to his best role out left.

The loan window opens in a couple of days. Here’s hoping Dyche can find some reinforcements.
