BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer says his main aim for the final day of the transfer window is to keep his squad intact.

Bowyer has space for one more signing under the terms of the club’s Financial Fair Play embargo.

But, with the loan window reopening later this month, he is set to keep his powder dry.

Instead his main focus is on not losing any more key players before the window shuts at 6pm tonight.

This summer Bowyer has seen Rudy Gestede and Tom Cairney sold to Aston Villa and Fulham respectively and Josh King turn down a new contract to sign for Bournemouth.

Rovers have also rejected a bid from Middlesbrough for Jordan Rhodes and knocked back enquiries from rivals Burnley for captain Grant Hanley and from Brighton & Hove Albion for Ben Marshall.

As of yesterday afternoon there had been no fresh interest in any of their star men.

And Bowyer is hoping that it stays that way.

He said: “Will anything be happening? Not a great deal, I hope.

“Obviously there’s always speculation but we’ve had that all the time we’ve been here.

“We’ll just watch the minutes tick by and then we’ll know where we’re at.

“We can’t go out and spend any money ourselves so the aim is to make sure we keep everybody.”

Bowyer can make a further loan or free transfer.

But he said: “You have to take into consideration the fact that one place would be all the way through until the window.

“We’ve just got to make sure that we don’t catch ourselves out.”

Bowyer has long called for the summer window to close before the start of the season.

That view has been backed in recent weeks by Premier League managers like Everton’s Roberto Martinez and West Brom’s Tony Pulis after seeing star players hand in transfer requests after the opening game of the campaign.

And Bowyer said: “I’m delighted the Premier League managers are saying it too because, no disrespect to myself, they’ve got bigger clout than me.

“It’s the same with the technology. We said it after the first game against Wolves and I don’t think anybody picked it up. But Arsenal score a good goal against Liverpool and then it’s gaining momentum now.

“They are the two things that would make the game better. And if it makes the game better, we’re ignorant and arrogant not to do that.

“The window is the same for all the leagues but when you look at the Premier League and the managers that have commented on it, and the amount of money that has been bandied about, it’s got to be done before the start of the season. It’s simple.

“Is it fair for the supporters as well? The kids go out and buy a new shirt, get their favourite player’s name on it, and then three weeks into the season he could be gone. That’s not fair on the families.

“And it does affect the lads. They are human beings. Of course it has an effect on them. But they’re professional and they go about their jobs properly.”

Star striker Rhodes returned from a fresh ankle injury in Friday’s 0-0 draw at home to Bolton Wanderers.

And Bowyer said: “Jordan head two great headers, two good opportunities, and he’s only going to get better because he’s not trained much with us this season and in pre-season because of the injury.

“His timings are only going to get better.”
