ANDRE Gray is determined to fulfil his Premier League and England ambitions with Burnley, and prove that he is worth every penny of the club record fee.

It is just over 12 months since the 24-year-old embarked on his first full season in the Football League and he admits it is a rapid rise, from non-league marksman to £6million man.

But striker Gray is confident that working under Sean Dyche will put him on the path for what he wants to achieve, after taking inspiration from former Clarets strikers Charlie Austin and Danny Ings, who both had spells out of the Football League before taking their game to the top level through their time at Turf Moor.

“It’s just the environment and the experience of the manager. It’s a step up in every way for me personally. He (Dyche) wants to push me on and get me in a position that the likes of Danny Ings and Charlie Austin have been in,” said Gray, admitting they were a tough act to follow but insisting that is the aim.

“Definitely, and to play for England as well.

“That’s my main aim and that’s why I came here.

“You’ve seen the former strikers here that have done it, Jay Rodriguez, Charlie Austin, Danny Ings etc.

“I played against Jamie Vardy (the former Fleetwood Town striker now with Leicester) as well.

““It’s there to see that it can be done and I’ll never give up that hope.

“That’s obviously a big ambition for me and hopefully I can do that while I’m playing for Burnley.

“That was 80 per cent of the factor in me coming here.

“I’ve always had that ambition since I was young.

“They (Burnley) have got the experience with strikers, I think everyone knows that. Hopefully I can be the next one.”

As for the club as a whole, he feels everything is in place at Burnley for the side to bounce straight back up to the Premier League, and he is keen to play his part.

“Of course,” he said. “It was my first day in training on Monday and not one player was off the mark at any point.

“You can see why they’ve been where they’ve been, through sheer hard work and the quality that comes with that, so why not?

“They haven’t lost many players since coming down from the Premier League so I don’t see why we won’t do it.”

He sees similarities between the Burnley and Brentford dressing rooms in their respective promotion and play-off seasons, and Gray - who is set to make his debut on Saturday at Bristol City, who he turned down last week in favour of Burnley - is confident of the Clarets repeating their efforts of 2013/14.

“Last year (at Brentford) it was a tight knit group and it was a case of everyone working hard for each other and it showed what that can do to the team. That was a massive factor with us last season and that’s why we did so well,” he said.

“I see it being the same here when Burnley were promoted. There was a desire from everybody in the team, and I saw that on Monday in training.”

As for the £6million pricetag, which is double the previous record set by Steven Fletcher in 2009 and matched by George Boyd last year, Gray insisted it would not weigh heavily on his shoulders.

“I didn’t put the pricetag on my head so I’ve just got to prove to Burnley that I’m worth every penny,” he said.
