THE 115th Lancashire League campaign got up and running yesterday - and, inevitably, it rained!

Over at Dill Hall Lane, as Enfield edged past last year's runners-up Bacup in a thrilling last-ball victory, the weather played its part.

Thankfully, following a third departure out of the dressing rooms, play managed to defeat the weather and continue to the close, although the second innings was shortened to 37 overs.

They squeezed a result out and those braving the elements were treated to a classy display from two New Zealand professionals.

International all-rounder Chris Harris, a superb one-day technician for the Kiwis down the years, showed signs that he could take Bacup one step further to the Championship this year, grabbing five wickets on his debut before firing 48 with the bat.

Brandon Hiini, one of nine new Lancashire League professionals this season, struck a fine half-century and took four wickets on debut.

Champions Burnley were turned over by Haslingden with Andrew Clough top-scoring for the visitors with 64 and professional Dan Christian claiming six wickets.

Lowerhouse beat Church by 27 runs with the opening five batsmen putting together a strong total and it was too much for Church who could only muster 158 in reply as they chased a reduced total of 186.

Colne won at home to Todmorden by 107 runs, with the pick of the batsmen Sean Lemon, scoring 67 not out.

Nelson suffered an opening-day defeat by eight wickets at the hands of East Lancs, John Turner hitting a half century for East Lancs.

At Acre Bottom, Phillip Hayes hit 71 and David Bell 59 as Ramsbottom cruised past Accrington.

And Rishton defeated Rawtenstall by eight wickets thanks to a superb 95 from professional Saeed Anwar and a six-wicket haul from Garth Wyse.

l Burnley did manage to win on Saturday as they beat Nelson on the last-ball of the game to win the Ron Singleton Colne Trophy at Seedhill.
