I WAS pleased to see Matt Kilgallon and Lee Williamson sign new contracts.

No matter how good your younger players are, you need a bit of experience.

So, with David Dunn leaving, it was important to keep two of the experienced lads.

MORE TOP STORIES:

Older heads are very important in the dressing room and also out on the pitch.

But, even with Matt and Lee staying, I still think Blackburn’s squad is a little bit on the young side, especially for a league like the Championship.

I’m not surprised, then, that Gary Bowyer is looking to bring in one or two more experienced players.

You look back to the end of the season, when we were letting leads slip left, right and centre.

When you’re 23 or 24, you’re still learning the game in many ways, and sometimes, when you go two goals up, you can be too enthusiastic and think, ‘they’re not going to catch us, so let’s go for it and score some more’.

Whereas experienced players will turn around and say, ‘hang on, let’s shut up shop, or if there is going to be another goal, let’s make sure it’s us who scores it’.

That’s the attitude you’ve got to have and that is the attitude Rovers have got to develop.

And that includes the younger lads. The ones who are around 23 or 24 have probably been professionals for five or six years now.

And, really in 12-18 months time, they’re there. By then you’re an experienced player and that’s when you’ve got to step up to the plate.

But, while Matt and Lee have put pen to paper, we’re still waiting to see what Josh King wants to do.

He’s a good player and, on his day, he can be a brilliant player.

I still think he’s got to do a lot of work on his game when he has his back to goal.

But he’s got great pace and nine times out of 10, if you knock a ball over the top, he’ll get there.

If I was him I’d take the contract that has been offered by Blackburn because he will learn under Gary, who has proved he can develop players.

But I can understand why Josh is taking his time.

If I was him I’d probably sit tight, too, and wait to see if there are any movements for Jordan Rhodes and Rudy Gestede.

Because, if we’re being realistic, it would still be hard for him to regularly start up front with those two at the club.

So, as I say, I can see why he feels there is no rush for him to sign and why he is leaving his options open.

But, if the club puts pressure on him to make a decision, I would advise him to stay.
