BURNLEY were held to a 0-0 draw by Stoke City as Jack Butland prevented Danny Ings from signing off at Turf Moor with a goal.

Ings is expected to leave the Clarets when his contract expires this summer so this was likely to have been his final home appearance for Burnley, but Stoke keeper Butland denied him a goal on three occasions.

The Clarets, whose relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last weekend, remain 19th in the table after a match that had a distinctly end of season feel to it.

Ings had the first chance of the game when he made a fine solo run into the box but fired his effort straight at his England under 21 team-mate Butland.

Ings seemed to determined to get on the scoresheet and, with England under 21 boss Gareth Southgate watching on from the stand, Butland denied him again after George Boyd had headed the ball back across goal from a left-wing cross.

Butland was by far the busier of the two keepers and made a superb reflex save to keep out David Jones’ half volley from 10 yards, before a third save from Ings as the striker looked for a goal from outside the box.

Charlie Adam attempted a repeat of his recent long range goal at Chelsea, only for his 50-yard effort to sail over the bar, before Jonathan Walters headed straight at Tom Heaton.

Stoke then had the best chance of the first half on the counter attack, as Walters crossed from the right and Mame Biram Diouf somehow headed wide from six yards. Walters curled narrowly off target a minute later.

Heaton had to make himself big to make a good save to deny Diouf from close range just before the hour mark, after Jason Shackell had missed Adam’s cross.

Matt Taylor had a right-foot shot deflected just wide for the Clarets, while Steven Nzonzi fired narrowly off target from distance for Stoke.

Burnley brought on Norwegian midfielder Fredrik Ulvestad for a debut late on, but the game petered out into a draw.
