TERRY Pashley has urged Burnley Under-18s to bounce back from the disappointment of an FA Youth Cup exit at the hands of Nottingham Forest.

The young Clarets went down to a 2-0 defeat at the City Ground in the fifth round of the competition, missing out on a possible home quarter-final against Tottenham or Manchester United.

It was a frustrating way for the campaign to end, following impressive performances and victories over AFC Wimbledon and Cardiff City.

Having named an unchanged team from the side that knocked Cardiff out a week ago, Pashley said he was disappointed his side failed to reach their potential in the East Midlands.

“My main disappointment is that the boys didn’t show what we are capable of and all the lads are disappointed, but they will learn from this,” he said. “I told them to compare the atmosphere in the dressing room after the Cardiff game to what it is now.

“There are highs and lows in football, but it was a disappointing night and I don’t think we ever got going.”

Forest broke the deadlock shortly before the half-hour mark before clinching the tie with a second on 65 minutes.

“We conceded a poor goal half an hour in from a set piece and we just didn’t get hold of the ball enough, didn’t pass it well and didn’t do the things we did well last week against Cardiff,” said Pashley.

“Having said that, Forest deserve a lot of credit. They went about it with no nonsense and they played the way they wanted to play.”

The youngsters have won seven of their last nine Youth Alliance games, and Pashley wants them to turn their attentions back to that competition. But it will be a hectic end to the season having seen recent league fixtures postponed due to either pitch redevelopment or bad weather.

Pashley added: “We have got to concentrate on the league now. We have to get back to our bread and butter, which is league football.

“The boys have now got to work to constantly improve themselves and that is our job to help them on the way. We now get back to basics and start working again, starting this Saturday against Preston.”
