BLACKBURN Rovers resume their Championship campaign at home to Wolves on Sunday with Gary Bowyer insisting they have to become more ruthless.

Rovers will go into their first league match of 2015 on the back of an impressive 2-1 FA Cup win at Charlton Athletic.

But their manager did not cut a completely satisfied figure as he felt the margin of victory, achieved without rested top-scorers Rudy Gestede and Jordan Rhodes, should have been greater.

Bowyer also believes his side’s failure to take their chances cost them three points against Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough before the turn of the new year.

So, while he has been pleased by the level of performances they have produced since the defeat at Brentford, the Rovers boss wants them to develop a killer touch.

“We’ve got to make sure we continue the year as we have started it,” said Bowyer who, apart from Tommy Spurr and Jason Lowe, is set to be at full strength for the visit of play-off rivals Wolves.

“But we’ve got to be more ruthless than what we have been. We missed a lot of opportunities at Bolton, we missed a couple against Middlesbrough, and missed quite a few against Charlton.

“We’ve got to put it all together now.”

Only one team who spent the whole of 2014 in the Championship – Bournemouth (10) – lost fewer games than Rovers (11) in 2014.

And only five teams – Bournemouth (91), Derby County (82), Watford (82), Bristol City (79) and promoted Wolves (79) – scored more goals than the Ewood Park outfit (77) in the entire Football League.

But Bowyer admits Rovers, who won 19, drawn 17 and lost 11 of their 47 games in 2014, must turn more draws into victories in the second half of the season.

Asked of his targets for 2015 he said: “The first main target is to try and come through January unscathed through the window. That is the main aim.

“We’ve got to try and build momentum, stay level-headed both in victory and defeat, and finish really strongly and see where it gets us.

“The play-offs are something that myself and another 15 managers are looking at.

“The word is momentum, if we can get that momentum that we had at the end of last season, when we went 12 unbeaten, and rather than having so many draws, get more wins, then it should be an interesting 2015.

“It will be interesting to see what people do in January and you’ve just got to stay in and around it.”

Rovers’ FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to the Premier League’s Swansea City, meanwhile, will take place on Saturday, January 24 with a 12.45pm kick-off.

The match will be shown live on BBC Wales with both clubs receiving £48,000.

Should a replay be required it would go-ahead at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium on Wednesday, February 4 with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Rovers’ league trip to Derby County, which was scheduled for January 24, has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 27 with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Earlier this week Derby confirmed they are sending on-loan striker Leon Best back to Rovers.

There was speculation yesterday that Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest are interested in taking Best on loan.

But Rovers have heard nothing from either club.

Todd Kane, however, is joining Forest.

The Chelsea right-back spent the whole of last season on loan at Rovers.

After Bowyer opted against re-signing Kane he joined League One outfit Bristol City on loan in November.

But Chelsea are now sending him to Forest, who like Rovers, are able only to sign players on loan and free transfers until the summer at least after failing Financial Fair Play.
