BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer boss believes left-winger Ben Marshall is the man to solve his side’s right-back problem.

Marshall was thrust into the right-back role in the second half of Saturday’s exciting 2-2 Ewood Park draw with Watford after Alex Baptiste came off with a calf injury which will rule him out of tonight’s trip to Rotherham United.

The former England U21s international responded by producing an excellent performance which culminated in him setting up the equaliser for Ryan Tunnicliffe.

And, with Jason Lowe still sidelined and Adam Henley having not started a league game at right back since March, the versatile Marshall, who has also played on the right of midfield and behind the strikers this season, is set to continue in the position for the Roses clash with Rotherham.

Bowyer said: “We were speaking about it as a staff this morning that Marshy must be one of the only players in the world who can play left wing and then go to right back and then still have the ability to go and play as a No 10.

“If you ask Marshy he’d probably reckon he could do a job at centre half and in goal no problem as well!

“But seriously his response was magnificent.

“It was a change we had to make, he slotted in there and his performance was like he’d been playing there for years.

“We’ve seen him play a game and a half at right back and both times he’s produced man-of-the-match performances.

“At Leeds United away on New Year’s Day he was exceptional and then on Saturday he slotted in there magnificently and produced a fantastic cross for the equaliser.”

Tom Cairney was playing ahead of Marshall, on the right of midfield, in the second half against Watford.

And the pair, who live in the same apartment building in Manchester, linked up to thrilling effect to create the first goal of Tunnicliffe’s career.

Bowyer, who will also be without Paul Robinson, David Dunn and Chris Brown tonight, said: “They’re good mates off the pitch and I thought you saw their relationship on the pitch benefited from that.

“They have a good understanding, they are two very, very good footballers, and they linked up ever so well on Saturday.

“Now we’re looking for that to continue.”
