GEORGE Boyd insists fans did not see the best of him on his impressive Burnley debut – vowing to improve further once he is fully fit.

Boyd earned praise from manager and team-mates after an encouraging first appearance for the Clarets in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace, a fortnight after joining the club from Hull City for £3million.

The 28-year-old produced a bright display on the left flank and showed signs of why he has scored 107 goals from midfield during his career.

But it was Boyd’s first competitive start of the season, with the former Peterborough man’s last start for Hull coming against Lokeren in the Europa League on August 21.

“It was my first game for a month so I got a bit of cramp at the end,” he said.

“It was my first game, it will help the more I get to know my team-mates and fitness wise. The training is so intense and it's helping me already.

“It will take me one or two games and then I'll be firing.

“But I felt good, lung wise I felt fine and I think as a team we played some good football.

“I loved it.”

It has been an incredible two years for Boyd, who was booed by Crystal Palace fans after coming close to joining the Eagles from Peterborough in January 2013.

Days later he inadvertently made the headlines after Nottingham Forest pulled out of signing him on deadline day because of a failed eye test, but he soon joined Hull and helped them to immediate promotion to the Premier League.

Then came an appearance as a substitute in the FA Cup final against Arsenal this May, before featuring in Europe for the first time at the start of this season.

It was the desire to play regularly that tempted him to join Burnley, though, and he is determined to help them stay in the top flight.

“It's been a crazy few years, it’s never boring,” said Boyd, who started his career in non-league with Stevenage.

“Obviously with getting promoted to the Premier League, the FA Cup final and Europe this season, it's been a brilliant few seasons.

“But I thought it was important just to come out and play week in, week out at this level and thankfully the gaffer has given me that opportunity.

“Once you get a taste of the Premier League you don't want to go anywhere else and I'm sure with the squad we've got that we've got a great chance of staying up.

“Even from watching the first couple of games on TV I saw how well they played, and I think everyone saw on Saturday what a good team we are.

“The intensity of the training is so good, it prepares you for the matches.

“The team spirit too, they've welcomed me, Nathan (Chalobah) and Keano (Michael Keane) straight in.

"It’s been brilliant.”
