BLACKBURN Rovers star Tom Cairney has been nominated for the Championship player of the month award for August.

The versatile midfielder is up against Nottingham Forest winger Michail Antonio, Millwall captain and centre back Alan Dunne and Charlton Athletic striker Igor Vetokele for the prize.

Cairney has picked up from where he left off after being named Rovers’ player of the year for last season.

He scored a stunning goal in the opening day 1-1 draw at home to Cardiff City before producing an even better, long-range effort in the 3-1 defeat at Norwich City.

Both of Cairney’s goals came when he started out wide on the right.

But the 23-year-old has also played in the centre of midfield and, in Saturday’s 3-1 loss at Wolves, behind lone striker Jordan Rhodes.

The winner of the player of the month award will be announced tomorrow along with the manager of the month prize.

In the running are Norwich’s Neil Adams, Wolves’ Kenny Jackett, Millwall’s Ian Holloway and Stuart Pearce of table-toppers Nottingham Forest.
