FORMER Clitheroe manager Chris Stammers has revealed he left the club because he was embarrassed by Saturday's FA Trophy defeat by Kettering Town.

The Blues were thumped 10-1 by the Nationwide North side, prompting Stammers to tender his resignation almost as soon as the final whistle sounded.

He said: "I thought we had a chance. I wasn't going down there to have a jolly or a knees up.

I wanted to achieve something for the club.

"When I go into a club, that club becomes part of me, and I become a supporter.

"If I was a supporter of any club and I watched them get beat 10-1, then I would be absolutely devastated.

"It's the biggest defeat in the club's history.

"Alright we've made history in getting to that stage and the club's made a little bit of money, but managers are judged on results, and if I'm judged on this result then I've not been a success."

Stammers only took over at the helm at the start of pre-season and brought in a number of young players.

And although their form in the league has been relatively poor of late, they have enjoyed good runs in the cup.

Stammers added: "The result has hurt me big time, but I've got to move on and I wish the club all the very best for the future.

"I still believe they can reach the play offs with the squad they have there and I hope they do for the supporters of the club, because they deserve it.

"They were fantastic with me and I can't thank them enough."
